My Big Science Book —

I love to learn together with my kids, ages 4 and 8, and I love activities that wrap learning in hands-on fun. My daughter received My Big Science Book (Priddy Books, 2004) by Roger Priddy as a gift and it has been a gift that has kept on giving.

There are lots of science experiment books out there but we think My Big Science Book is tops. The color photographs make this one a 5 star book. There are step-by-step instructions for each of the 49 experiments with photographs for each step! The experiments use common household items like paper, paper clips, mirrors, flashlights, spoons and food coloring. There’s a list of about 50 items to use and most households would have over 40 of these on hand already, 42 if you’ve got a head of cabbage and a lemon!

My Big Science Book has a hard cover and thick, glossy pages. The spiral binding make it easy to have open and flat to read. The photos of kids are racially diverse and I really appreciate this.

The experiments include familiar favorites like bottle tornadoes, colored flowers, giant bubbles and vinegar volcanoes. They are also many that were original to us like the lemon battery, sunset bowl and bridge shapes experiments.

My son’s favorite (age 4) is the Shadow Puppets. They are quick to make and easy to use. My daughter (age 8) has enjoyed so many of these but her all time favorite is the Rocket Balloon.

Tip: The Rocket Balloon is the first experiment kid’s will find in this book and when we received this book we didn’t have a balloon in the house. If you buy this book for a child, you may want to include pack of latex balloons. This Mom has to add, always supervise young children who may put latex balloons in their mouths as they pose a choking hazard.

Most of these experiments can be enjoyed in 5-15 minutes so they are great when you have a little bit of time before dinner or bed and you want to use it for an impacting family fun time. You can also use the index to find experiments to match your child’s learning goals on topics like air pressure or solids, liquids and gases.

The SRP for My Big Science Book is $14.95. Our copy was purchased at a bookstore for $12.99 and it has been available on Amazon.com for $10.17.

If you're in the market for fun-things-to-do books, you might also enjoy Things to Do and The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions.

My Viewpoint:
As a teacher and Mom, I use many science experiment books from our home collection and from the library. If I could only have one, it would have to be My Big Science Book.

A good way to trick kids into learning - make it fun. ;>

sounds like so much fun and a great idea to use it for family fun time instead of time in front of the tv -- just as good as family game night.
