My Best Friend's Wedding is the tale of a woman named Julianne, who has had a lifelong agreement with her best friend, that should they still both be single when they hit 30, that they would get married to each other. Having dated before, this seemed like an unrealistic occurrence, seeing that they were both pretty active people. But as her 30th birthday approached, Julianne started to think about how great it might be to get married to the best friend she had taken for granted all these years. Putting off really talking to him though, presents a consequence in the form of a new girl named Kimmy, who has become engaged to Michael (the best friend) and now Julianne is being invited to the wedding. Thinking to herself that she still has a chance, she agrees to attend, with the sole purpose of upstaging the fiance, and taking her place beside Michael at the alter.
If you look simply at the plot for this romantic comedy, you might come away thinking that the lead character is simply manipulative and that the film won't have any redeeming qualities being led by a character you don't want to support. But, with some great writing, and an equally talented ensemble cast the story that might seem shallow, becomes an intriguing comedy, where the viewer really wants to know exactly how its going to play out. Starring as main character Julianne, we have Julia Roberts, in what I feel is one of her funniest films. Her supporting cast of Dermot Mulroney as Michael, Cameron Diaz in a break-out role as Kimmy, and the best actor of the whole film Rupert Everett as one of her current friends and closest confidant. It is Rupert that tries to show her what she is doing, and can best be referred to as her conscience in the film, but Julianne isn't planning on listening any time soon.
Director P.J. Hogan really knew how to draw the best comedic moments and emotions from the cast, and was quite good at telling a story that was in parts intriguing, heart-felt, and extremely humerus. On one hand you have a character trying to derail a wedding without getting caught, and on the other side, a fiance that just really wants to get to know her future husbands former best friend. I didn't think that I would exactly enjoy the story when I first watched it, but it quickly became one of my favorite comedies that I will watch every so often to enjoy the story. The cast, the story, and especially the great score and soundtrack really made this a winner in my opinion. The DVD just makes it that much better, and if you are a fan of any of the character actors involved, this is going to be a very enjoyable story.
