Have you ever purchased something that you had no intention of buying until you somehow became convinced that it was something you couldn't live without? That happened to me when I first discovered the Mustang Mixer Deluxe.
I wasn't in the market for a blender, grinder, juicer, or mixer, but after receiving a "hot" email tip about it being on sale for approximately $20 plus shipping, I talked myself into buying one. Nevermind that I had a functional blender sitting on my countertop, an almost new (and rarely used) juicer sitting in the back of my cupboard, or that I'd never had a need to grind anything in my life. I was convinced that the Mustang Mixer Deluxe was the latest and greatest kitchen gadget that I just had to have!
The Mustang Mixer Deluxe is a 4-in-1 appliance that allows the user to perform one of four functions at one time: blend, grind, juice, or mix. The base is the primary unit and contains the motor and electrical cord. If the user wants to use the blender, they attach the blender on top of the base and turn on the power. To use the grinder, the user attaches the grinder piece to the top of the base. Etc., etc.
First impressions mean everything and as soon as I received the large package on my doorstep, I was not impressed. There was no picture on the box and the only thing noticeable were the large "Made in China" letters on the outside of it. Strike one.
Upon taking the base and attachments out of the box, I was skeptical at how well the plastic attachments would hold up. For the price that I paid, I wasn't expecting a glass blender, but I was surprised at how cheap the blender looked. It was also big and bulky and didn't fit into my dishwasher. Strike two.
I purchased the Mustang Mixer Deluxe primarily for the blender function. I use a blender on an almost daily basis, so with a one horsepower motor, I believed that I was buying a quality product that would perform well. Right away, I was very disappointed in how poorly the blender chopped ice cubes. I only use four ice cubes but I found myself always shaking the blender while it was in use to get the ice cubes chopped. Yes, every time!
Even with the hassle of shaking the blender to help chop my ice cubes, I continued using this product almost everyday for six months. I didn't love it, but it did the job. Well, it did the job until the blades got too dull to chop the ice cubes. That's when everything started to go downhill. It got to the point where I was chopping ice cubes one at a time, but even then it started to no longer work. The ice cubes were getting stuck underneath the blades and I found my blood pressure rising trying to get them out and try again and again. When it got to the point where I was no longer making protein shakes, but blending chocolate milk, I knew that the Mustang Mixer Deluxe had to go. Strike three.
I never tried to use the other attachments to grind, juice, or mix because they were too bulky to store in my kitchen. They are still in the original box downstairs in my basement.
If I could go back in time, I would have pressed the delete button on that "hot" tip email and never have purchased the Mustang Mixer Deluxe. In my opinion, it's a big hunk of junk that I have no use for. I have since spent the same amount of money on a brand new name-brand blender that is made of glass and fits in my dishwasher. What a luxury it has been to have chopped ice again.
