When you think 70's progressive rock you have to think of Genesis. One of the innovators in the genre, these guys rule! Now, some of the best Gabriel albums were made before I was born. So, I never got a chance to see them live. Fortunately, there's The Musical Box. This a full-on, no-holds-barred, take-a-trip-back-in-time tribute band to Gabriel era Genesis. They perform the exact shows from several of the early seventies album tours, including "Fox Trot", "Selling England by the Pound", and "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". I saw the Selling England by the Pound show last night at the Vic Theater in Chicago. I have to say I was blown away. They have the exact sets (at least compared to the grainy videos I remember), same costumes, stage presence, and most importantly the exact music and sound. They used mostly authentic instruments of the day: Gretch and Gibson guitars and Moog bass pedals, and Moog keyboards. I wasn't close enough to tell for sure, I think they even had a real Mellotron. All that matters is that it definitely sounded it!
If you're a Genesis fan and these guys come to your town, don't miss the show!
