One of the up and coming trends in group exercise are classes that almost resemble a party atmosphere. For example, Zumba classes often use Latino music--people have fun while they try out some dance steps and it's great exercise. I teach group exercise classes and would like your opinion. If you had to choose song titles for a group exercise class, what would inspire you to dance?

AC/DC - Shook Me All Night Long - hum - that may be better for a party dance or something though.

When exercising, I prefer music with a steady fast paced beat.  It keeps me on time with the moves and keeps me going!  Believe it or not, techno music can be very good for exercise :)

Thanks for the tips, you guys!

I've actually been looking at possibly creating several different play lists, like Rock, Latino, Musicals, Hip Hop, and Christian. I have to be careful about lyrics, and I keep finding that many of the songs with the best beats have lyrics that are rather questionable. Any thoughts on these (I wouldn't necessarily be putting them on the same play list):

  • RESPECT
  • Conga
  • We Will Rock You
  • Wipeout
  • Boomin'
  • I Heard It Through the Grapevine
  • Another One Bites the Dust
  • Hit Me With Your Best Shot
  • Everybody Dance Now
  • Electric Avenue
  • Oye Como Va
  • Smooth
  • Before You Accuse Me

Any songs that you would HATE to hear in an exercise class?

I think We will rock you might be kind of slow depending on what kind of exercise you are doing.  The rest, I could see how they would work!

Another I'd suggest is the Grease remix!  They used to always play that at clubs and it's definitely PG.  It gets EVERYONE dancing and it's like 7 minutes so it's long.  Since it's a remix, you could change up the moves when the different songs pick up.

If you want a song that will really get ppl ut of breath, try panic at the disco :-D  Their music is soooo fast it would be kind of funny seeing an exercise class try to keep up with it.

Thanks for the tips! I did an "urban burn" type of class this morning and used some techno , rap, etc. songs and we did some hip hop, simple breaking, and kickboxing. I'm still fine tuning, so keep the ideas coming!

I grew up in the 80's. I love the dance mixes of "let the music play" by Shannon and "fascinated" by Company B They have a steady beat and are fun to dance to!

My all time favorite is still, and I suspect always will be, Old Time Rock and Roll by Bob Seger.  I can't keep still when it comes on the radio.

Meri - I love that song!

How about "Rhythm Is A Dancer" by Snap!, "One More Night" by Cascada, or the clean version from Black Eyed Peas - "Let's Get It Started." Those are golden oldies of the 90s and early 2000s.

Just to add to this... it's like the ONLY type of music that I can work out to! Either that or punk rock... but that (and Britney or Justin, my other tunes to work out to) have questionable lyrics. Still, nothing like a good techno or rock song to keep me going on my long runs. Ugh!

Actually, now that I think about it, songs from Jimmy Eat World or The Ataris are pretty safe bets. They're more rock but most of if not all of their lyrics are clean. You can find all of their lyrics online though if you want to make sure.

Lionel Richie's "All Night Long" always makes me want to get up and dance. Sounds like a fun class!

I dug around in my iTunes a little more making sure to pay attention to lyrics.

Pretty much any ABBA song is clean. But maybe that "mamma mia" movie has made them kind of played out for right now.

Some 70's disco, too, like "don't leave me this way" by thelma houston (without the slow intro part) or "i love the nightlife (disco round)" by alicia bridges

I even think "stepping stone" by the monkees has potential, and i think there are dance mixes made of it even

going back to my 80's roots:

"point of no return" by expose; "what's on your mind (pure energy) by information society; and "the safety dance" by men without hats have good beats with clean lyrics too

As far as songs i wouldn't like... well I have to say what you are doing is good, because when I did go to aerobics classes I found out that certain instructors usually used like two or three mixes over and over. If you were stuck going to the same classes because of schedule, it could get really monotonous. Top 40 stuff can get old quick because you have to hear it all day on the radio. I'm going to think more on this because I love music! Good topic

All music.  Len and I go dancing three times a week and you can't keep me down.  You only have to ask Jo, as she and her husband came with us, when they were in our neck of the woods.

This is how I keep my shape :)

OK, the soundtrack to Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed is great. I would dance to every song on that album! Sounds funny, but it's true!  :)

You guys are giving me some great ideas. I will say that aerobics instructors are often faced with quite a dilemma. In the past, many instructors would buy specially mixed aerobics music that had 32-count continuous music that would fade one song right into the next and would keep the beats per minute at a certain rate or at alternating rates for interval training. These tapes or CDs often cost about $25 each. Aerbocis instructors around my neck of the woods often make about $8/hour, and a lot of instructors are only part-time, so they may only teach about two classes per week. That may play into why you guys might hear the same music over and over. It also takes a pretty good deal of time to work up new choreography that goes with each song.

If you guys think of more, feel free to post them, and I'll keep checking out your ideas. Those of you who listen to Country, Christian, Latino, or Big Band songs, etc. I'm interested in creating some choreography with some different genres as well.

I'm also looking to perhaps make a few playlists of songs for yoga class to give some more variety there too.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Old Time Rock 'n' Roll. I can't sit still when I hear it. I'm no Tom Cruise but I do pretty well. Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen. You're Sixteen (even though it's been a while since I was.)  Dancing Queen by Abba. Tulsa Time by Eric Clapton. I jump up & dance when  I hear any of those 5.

Any upbeat Jackson 5 tune, and as always, Michael Jackson's "Man In The Mirror".

But I'll dance to George Jones, Scorpions and a million others too.  Just the other day, I walked into my elderly neighbor's house and "Together Again" was on.  I had not seen her in 2-3 months and she and I were thrilled and started 2-stepping.  She's 75.  She rocks ;)

Today, I wished I could dance to Malo's "Suavecito", I won that album when I was a teenager.  I think my mom threw it away at some point.

"Can't Get No Satisfaction" by the Stones...I was just a teenager when this came out, but my sisters and I would literally run to the radio and start dancing...we're all old ladies now, but this is a favorite memory.  When listening to the 'oldies' station and this song plays, I still call out 'break time' just like the old days...Good memories!  :o)
