I am finding theatre lovers/goers rare on blog sites. I was born and raised in NYC and from 1946 til 1969 I saw most every show on Broadway which means I saw the best of the best.

I support local theatre whenever I can afford to but I seldom see very young (under 50 LOL) people in the audience. Are you under 50? Do you go to the theatre? If not, why not?

I love the theater and we try to go to shows once a year or more often.  I'm 28 now, and always go with my mom and my sister.  I got them tickets to Jersey Boys in January for their birthday and am looking for something they can take me to for my birthday :)

That said, I never go to local theater.  I'm just not into the local stuff.  Although I did see a lot of plays throughout High School (mostly for extra credit), I just prefer to see the larger than life productions of a real good show.

I've only been to New York once and we saw Titanic which was very good.  We also went to Toronto to see the Lion King and Chicago to see Joseph.  Other than that we stick to Detroit.

What's your favorite show?

I am under 50 and I LOVE live theatre.  My brother is a local actor here in Detroit so he's always doing a play somewhere.  Theatre is something my whole family has always been into and I can remember going to shows as a toddler and all thru my teens.  In our 20s my brother had a local troupe called the Ground Zero Players and I acted in a few shows and generally helped out. I don't help him out with his new ventures much anymore but my dad still does.  It's definitely a family affair with us and in our blood.  I guess we're all a bunch of dramatic hams when it comes right down to it.

As for not seeing many young people, I think theatre is one of those things to which one has to be exposed to truly appreciate it. I was a theatre kid from way back so I learned to appreciate it very young.  But even in high school I can remember being exposed to a lot of Shakespeare and other boring shows.  So if that's the first taste a kid has of live theatre, they're not likely to really get into it or give it another shot.  I remember whole classes of kids in jr high and high school being dragged on field trips to see boring plays.  I love theatre, but to this day I just cannot stand Shakespeare.  Maybe if kids were exposed to something a little more exciting, they'd get the bug.

Don't sneer at local theatre--I now live in South Florida and the regional theatre here is amazing.

You might enjoy reading my blog series on "A Chorus Line" to which I'll be adding another post later today.
