Okay I know everyone has sang the wrong lyrics to a favorite song. And don't say you've never done it, lol!   Mine was a well known and much loved CCR song," "Dont go around tonight, Well, its bound to take your life, Theres a bathroom on the right."

What's yours!

OK. Confession. I thought the old country song was saying "El Fire Up" instead of "Elvira." Duh. They should crisp up those words, and I should listen better.

Cool topic!

My siblings and I talk about this all the time and reminisce about the way we used to sing the songs.

Kenny Rogers "Lucille" for me was always "with 400 children and the crocks in the fields."  My brother told me he would leave to with that many children but that it was supposed to be 4 hungry children and the crops in the fields.

Another one is either by Trace Adkins or Tracy Lawrence--It's the song I smell TROUBLE.  Well, I used to sing it (as an adult) as "I spilled tea all over your BLT."

And a Christmas song, "We Three King Eternals"--well, one of my siblings said it wrong and we then all learned the wrong lyrics and for years we were saying, "We three kinky turtles."

Oh, I had a cousin who never could say satin sheets in the country songs.  He said satin cheese to lie on, satin pillows to cry on.  And in the other song that was supposed to be "Slide off of your satin sheets.  Slip into your long soft mink."  He would replace sheets with cheese.  What was it with him and cheese?

I will add more posts as I recall them because this is a good discussion that will generate some wonderful memories and laughs.

This is such a great topic.  Thanks, Grandmaw!

For more misunderstandings, check out Patty Therre's review about "Ten Most Misunderstood Songs"!

Take care, everybody!

When my friends and I first heard the song "Sloopy", we thought they were singing, "Hang on,Snoopy, Snoopy hang on".

I thought I already had this discussion w/some people.  I bet if I go to Patty's review I will see some similar comments that I made there too!  Thanks for reminding me b/c I was beginning to think it was a De Javu moment since I'm too young to have a senior moment ;+)

A friend in TN used to sing Garth Brook's "Friends in Low Places."  The line "I'm not much for social graces..."  Rodney would sing, "I'm not much for sausage and gravy."  haha!

When I was a whippersnapper (too young to have senior moments) back in high school in the 50's, there was a teeny-bopper love song called "Oh VENUS! (Make my dreams come true!)"  It took me three months to realize that this song did NOT say "Oh PEANUTS!, make my dreams come true."   Too bad that it cost me a humiliating moment because somebody heard me singing it before they pointed out my mistake but here is something that getting older has taught me -- eventually, almost everything seems funny if you live long enough.

Does anyone know the REAL words to "Louie Louie" by The Kingsmen?

Louie Louie, oh no
Me gotta go
Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said
Louie Louie, oh baby
Me gotta go

Fine little girl waits for me
Catch a ship across the sea
Sail that ship about, all alone
Never know if I make it home

Three nights and days I sail the sea
Think of girl, constantly
On that ship, I dream she's there
I smell the rose in her hair.

Okay, let's give it to 'em, right now!

See Jamaica, the moon above
It won't be long, me see me love
Take her in my arms again
Tell her I'll never leave again

Let's take it on outa here now
Let's go!!

I almost forgot my favorite misconstuded lyrics,  Elton John lyric; "Hold me closer, Tony Danza".  "Count the headlice on the highway." LOL, ah,  it never gets old!

Here are some of my best song mess-ups!

The Beatles: Penny Lane: On Penny Lane there is a farmer signing autographs.

Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild: Everybody's gonna make it happen, take the world in a love embrace, five dollars a gun at once and explode into space.

Rolling Stones Beast of Burden: I'll never need no pizza burnin'

England Dan & John Ford Coley's I'm not talkin' bout movin' in: I'm not tossin' all the linens, and I don't wanna change your life...

Who doesn't have a good line for Aretha Franklin's Respect?: R-E-S-P-E-C-T find out what it means to me, R-E-S-P-E-C-T take down to the sea.

I didn't sing this one wrong, but in Steve Miller Band's "Fly Like An Eagle," I thought it was "Shoo the children with no shoes on their feet." I realized it's shoe, as in give them shoes, not shoo like make them go away!

I love Bon Jovi and know all their songs but when Wanted Dead or Alive came out, I could have sworn they said "I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse high rise" and I had NO idea what that meant.

Now I know it is "on a steel horse I ride" as in an airplane. But for a long time I sang it the other way and still do even though I know the real words.

I never understood Louie, Louie. I stand in awe of you mysticstarfish. How did you ever put that together? I wrote down the lyrics but I know that even if I'm reading them as I hear the song, I won't be able to fit what I'm looking at to what I'm hearing. The Bon Jovi song I had trouble with at first was Always. I understand now that the first line is "Romeo is bleeding" & it makes perfect sense. But for a while I thought he was saying "Tonio is bleeding" and I had no idea what relevence that had to anything. And it took me a long time to figure out what Meatloaf would do or not do for love - "I would do anything for love but I won't do that". I love the song Picture by Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow but he mumbles so badly that until I saw a video with the lyrics printed as I watched it, I didn't know 1/2 of what he was saying.

Dang, trying to recall - It's a Van Halen song on the album "1984"...now I'll have to go search it and repost later, but it's pretty funny me thinks ;)

OH OH!  It's the song "Panama" - I was always singing "HAD ENOUGH, HAD ENOUGH AW AW AW AW, HAD ENOUGH".
