I tend to associate music with the holidays in particular, but I love good music any time.

I have enjoyed playing the piano for years. It gives me a great outlet and is much cheaper than a psychiatrist! I played for a church for years and have played for a few weddings and funerals. To me, the weddings are the hardest. I've been trying to learn to play for soloists as well, but it's slow going with three small children helping me to play!

I was wondering if anyone else out there in Viewpoints land might also play a musical instrument or perhaps you'd like to learn to play a certain instrument.

What type of instrument do you especially like to hear?

Do any of you have any advice for those who would like to learn?

Since you play a lot of woodwind instruments that require you to use a lot of air then perhaps you could play the bagpipes for me!  It could be a duet: I would hold them while you blow into them.  I would get too short of breath if I tried.  Well, someone could play them while I sing.  That would be a beautiful accompaniment.

I also love the piano.  I took lessons for three years as a child and then for three years in college but just wouldn't discipline myself.  I was more into dancing, gymnastics and skating.  But now as I've gotten older I wish I would have stuck with the piano lessons.

I play the flute...and the radio!  LOL

I always wanted to play the harp but not enough to sacrifice the time and effort it would take to actually do it.  :(

Like Cyndi A I mostly play the radio ( and CDs) but I play piano and guitar.  I am not particularly talented. I just love music.  I am giving both of my kids piano lessons until they out learn me:) I have learned to play the violin through my daughter's violin lessons but it is funny, I know everywhere the fingers go and what she is doing right or wrong but it never sounds as good if I try to play it as when she does.

I am such a big believer in how music is good for the soul and the brain that it is a big part of our homeschooling.  My way of giving back is that I volunteer to lead a preschool music program where I cart in a HUGE basket of instruments and lead songs, games and movement. It also gives me a great place to try out new songs on the guitar and for my daughter to play her violin for such an appreciative and non-threatening audience.

One of my proudest parenting moments was years ago when my daughter and I played a guitar/violin duet- even though it was just Twinkle, Twinkle, we were doing it together.

in school i played the alto sax, the clarinet, trombone and tuba...Yes, I said the tuba! I was the only girl tuba player in parish honor band. I got a look of weird looks for parades and marching seasons. A little ol girl and big ol susaphone! The only thing I remember is the B flat scale from the bass clef. I can play a little guitar. The only whole song i know is happy birthday lol and i know a little of some nirvana songs

I played clarinet in high school and a few years ago, I taught myself how to play piano. Playing music helps soothe my nerves on stressful days.

My advice to others is to learn the basics on an easy instrument like the recorder first and then use a lot of patience and perseverance to learn harder instruments. Do not become discouraged because it takes time.

Well, I'm going to chime in and say I also play the stereo/CD player.  Right now I'm playing my mixpod on the Internet.

I don't think I could live without music; really!  I go to sleep with it and first thing when I wake up I turn the radio on.  I listen to CDs in my car and at the office or the Internet radio.  Music is a big part of my life and I just say, "God, thank you for the music and for putting a new song in my heart EVERY day."

As a young child of the '50's my folks thought it necessary to take lessons.  So, at age 8 they enrolled me at Startime Studios to study Tap Dance & Ballet.  What the hell were they thinking?  Didn't last long.  Next stop, musical instruments.  I liked the Sax, but my mom thought I wouldn't be able to sing while playing the Sax.  I would have been happy with the piano, but by then there was no room either in our apartment or budget for a piano.  The accordion!  By now I was sure my parents hated me.  I spent an entire year knawing through the straps so I could ditch practice and go play stickball with my friends.  Finally there were vocal lessons and I really got into singing.  If anyone from NY remembers those vocal groups who competed at the entrance of Manhattan Beach, I was there.

I play piano, by ear only.  I took lessons as a kid but when the purse-lipped teacher tried to make me read notes, I was bored and broke freeeeeeeeeeeeeee ~!  My mom quit paying for lessons and that was just fine by me.

I started playing by ear back in the day when Carole King's "Tapestry" album came out.  I had to hide the album from my mother, since she didn't like long frizzy hair or barefoot girls with long jeans that "might" have been dragging on the ground.   That was Carole on the cover.  I still know every song on that album by heart.

I can play most any tune if I listen to it for awhile, I don't have a piano or organ anymore, although we had both while I was growing up.  And anytime I'm near a piano, I ask if I can play, no matter who's around.  I can get a free piano on Craiglist almost anytime, people just want someone to come get it and haul it off, and we have two open back pickup trucks, and I can make some room...

So there are possibilities ;)

I've been playing guitar for 40 years and am decent but not spectacular. I also play drums a little and can bang out a few chords on the piano. I occasionally perform in bars and at parties, and can sing/play well enough to entertain. Usually.

I've played electric guitar since I was 17, so 30 years now. I played a '72 Ventura SG, wine red, until I wore the frets out. Now I play an '07 Epiphone SG, wine red. I play blues mostly, very hard on the fingers and strings but  great therapy. I keep my guitar and amp out in our cabin in the country so my MO is to let all of the stress and frustration build up throughout the week and then when I'm in the country on the weekend I take it out on the guitar.

I've been offered lead spots in bands but I don't like the musician lifestyle. Very ego-driven and unhealthy, at least with blues and rock. I am all about the music, not the people making it.

I am a professional musician. I play guitars, drums, keyboards, mandolin and banjo. When you're first learning a new instrument, you have to be kind to yourself and don't make it a chore that you HAVE to do. Remember, you PLAY the thing. Give yourself time to relax with it. Allow yourself to make mistakes and know that if you goof once, it's a mistake. If you can repeat the mistake...it's style. Mostly have fun.

I played violin for years. Now I just play Rock Band for PS3. I do sing occasionally when asked but try to hide when I know it's coming.

I just returned from a mission's trip and while in Kentucky I found myself visiting the music room where we stayed and playing the piano.  I took lessons for a few years as a child and then again in college but just didn't seem to be dedicated to the long hours of practice.  This weekend I decided that I want to play again so Memaw is going to loan me an electric keyboard.  I have ordered an adult beginner piano music book and I'm going to start playing again.  Anyone want to come to my house and give me lessons?  I'm a good student :+)
