To the Point

I had high hopes when we went to the Museum of African Diaspora the last time we were in San Francisco. However both my husband and I overall were in disappointed. Having said that there were enough great exhibitions to see for me to give MOAD 4 stars.

A Closer View

The Museum of African Diaspora is located at 685 Mission Street. They can be reached at 415-358-7200. Check out their website at www.moadsf.com for the hours and fees.

My first impression was how simple it was to walk in. I was used to being x-rayed and frisked as I walked into museums. It seemed that the woman at the desk wasn't surprised to see us but at the same time surprised since there were so few people. This woman explained the picture you will see taken by me of a face. As we walked up the stairs it becomes evident that this face is made up of picture pieces that represent the diaspora - the scattering of African people (as well as others).

I took the picture from the outside which is really the best place to get a good perspective of this feat.

Some of the exhibits
include "Celebrations, Rituals, and Ceremony", "Slavery Passages", and "Culinary Traditions." There is a very nice auditorium which I would recommend you go to and a store with some unusual items.

I take notes when we travel. The following is from my notes, "We went to the Museum of African Diaspora, which was different but unfortunately not quite what we expected. There was a huge exhibition on food around the world which was interesting but had nothing to do with the African Diaspora. There were several very well done videos including on on Celebrations that we enjoyed and an exhibit of the smaller version of the food exhibition which seemed like a waste of space."

I liked the room that was called the quiet room where I heard people talking about slavery. One exhibit was called "Hungry Planet: What the World Eats" and ended on January 20, 2008. It was a photo essay documenting 30 families from 24 countries showing us what the various people eat and the common thread of food among us all. I appreciate how well done it was but the exhibit took up a lot of space that I felt could have been used for other educational efforts.

I loved the permanent exhibit called Adornment. I have pictures below illustrating what you will see. Faces and clothes change to make a very unusual sight.

As I write this I realize that I did enjoy the museum but I would have like perhaps more history. I think that's what I was missing - the history of the people of Africa.

I like it!

I'm so glad to hear about other people checking out this great place! I work right down the street and pop in all the time - even if it's just to check out the great gift shop.
