Murder in the Hamptons —
After my last failed Lifetime attempt, I took a break from the channel for a few weeks. Normally I catch bits and pieces of the movies on that channel, but never watch them fully. One evening I sat down and was in the mood to watch a full Lifetime flick once again! It turned out to be pretty good.Plot
The movie starts with a dead body being rolled away and some gossipy ladies and men discussing it - "I heard she had a boyfriend" one says, while the other replies "I heard he had a boyfriend." Gossip spreads quickly in a town like this. Let's go back and see what really happened. Generosa Rand is a real estate agent scheduled to meet Mr. Ammon to show him an apartment - however he is very late. She gets frustrated and goes to his office to complain. "Why is it that people like you think that the rules don't apply to them?" Unfortunately he cuts off her speech by agreeing that he screwed up and basically charming her.
After having dinner with him, she really likes him...and he really likes her. Not hard to see where this is going. Ok, so they get married in a not so romantic way as it basically comes down to "marry me or don't date me at all".... but now we are wondering what happened to this couple? Flash between the couples relationship moving forward and more one on one interviews with people of the town and we really start to learn more about this couples history.... that's all I think I'll share.
Actors
Poppy Montgomery .... Generosa Rand is a pretty girl. Her mother died earlier and she spent a lot of her life being raised by different people. When she marries Ted she seems to fully engulf the rich lifestyle. Suddenly she's working her butt off making the house perfect, the kids perfect, the flowers perfect - just making life perfect. After all this she's showing lots of signs of stress... but at least her house looks great.
Guest: The tulips, they're gorgeous. It's like a sea of red.
Gen: What did you say? [dead silence] They're Burgundy, are you blind???
Guests: Oh yeah, Burgundy their gorgeous.
David Sutcliffe .... Ted Ammon is a charming guy who is also one of the rich ones - but he says he's earned every penny. He works hard and seems to be an all around great guy. When he met Gen she seemed so normal - how couldn't he fall in love. Yet, did he get into more than he could handle here?
Ted: Whatever I say or do is the wrong thing. I don't know what you want anymore!
Shawn Christian .... Danny Pelosi is a man Gen meets during a separation from her husband. He is helping her renovate her house - and eventually.... well you can figure it out! She sucks in another guy! He's a hands on type of guy and not quite like the business man Ted.... what has he got himself into???? You'll have to see!
So.. Did I like it?
This is kind of a backwards/forwards movie. They show random scenes of people being interviewed about a death, so you ultimately are paying a lot of attention to the scenes showing their relationship to see what happens. The clips and interviews are only hints to what happened without taking away too much suspense. And yes, there is suspense. This movie brought me what I usually expect from Lifetime - Drama, Suspense, Romance and some mild Entertainment. The storyline itself was kind of humorous as you watched Gen sometimes be normal and sometimes not so much. At times, she was like someone anyone could befriend - yet at other times her dark side came out!
Gen was very believable as the love interest at the start, so you would never expect that she could have any kind of crazy issues. Instead she seems so perfect - a little cynical but nice and friendly. That doesn't last very long. Ted is your typical work-a-holic who spends his days working and his nights schmoozing the clients. He is very confused, and Gen makes it impossible for him to understand what she wants because she doesn't even seem to know what she wants. In the last lifetime movie I saw my main complaint was how obvious it was that the lead woman was nuts - so in this movie I had a welcome change with two great leads! They did have the lifetime actor appeal, which means they aren't as good as on the big screen, but they were good for lifetime.
I also liked the pacing and the way the movie kind of started with the end. It made it so you knew something happened, but weren't quite sure what. Lifetime is made for women, but I think I could convince my boyfriend to watch this with me. It was written pretty well! The interviews were very realistic because it showed basically random gossipy rich people discussing the gossip they have heard and telling us what they believed about it. It showed how fast gossip can spread, especially in a close-knit community like this! Maybe I liked it because these interviews reminded me of reality TV which is my favorite kind of TV.
I gave this movie 4 stars because I was actually paying attention to it all the way through the the end and was very interested to see exactly what happened. The characters were appealing, the storyline had some twists, the gossip was humorous, and I was fully entertained. The reason I couldn't give it 5 stars is because there were some times where Gen got on my nerves and she did overact a little. It's a good movie, but doesn't leave me on the edge of my seat. You know *what* happened from the very beginning but it basically comes down to *who* did it.
Oh and if you needed another reason to check this out, how's this - it's based on a true story and they even tell you near the end to check out a website to see more details on the true crime story! No wonder it was so good, because it was real! Do not check out the website until the movie is over because it will ruin the movie for you. Enjoy!!
