Mucinex For Kids Liquid Expectorant —

Mucinex for Kids is an expectorant to be used when a child has a cough.  The Active ingredient in Mucinex is Guaifenesin (expectorant).

My son had a cough and his Doctor recommended this product every four hours for his symptoms.  I used the adult version (a tablet) of this product with great success.  It really helped get a good nights sleep.

I gave my son his first dose and after he drank it down he complained.  He said it tastes disgusting.  I told him to drink water to get the taste out of his mouth.  Four hours later, it was time for another dose.  He did not want to take it but gave in.

At this point, I wanted to see how bad it really did taste.  UGH!!!  What a mistake that was.  The artificial grape flavor is so overwhelming, and it is disgustingly sweet.  I put the ole readers on and read those tiny little words on the back of the bottle.

There are not one, but two different dyes added, flavor and sugar.

These products are for kids.  Why do they have to add all the extra dyes and sugars.  My child is not sensitive to dyes or sugar, but he now refuses to take this product because of the taste.

I would not make him continue taking Mucinex for Kids.  After a few unsuccessful tries, he was finally able to swallow the tablet version down.

While the product does work really well, I have a hard time recommending it because of the additives.  I will advise you to read the label carefully before administering it to your child, or ask your physician for a prescription for a pill.

In response to tamjack71's comment from Jan 27, 2009 at 1:14PM:

He was 9 when I gave it to him. I asked his doctor and my sister in law (she is a pediatric RN). Both said it would be ok. However, they both know his medical history, and are aware that he is healthy and above average on the growth charts (he is very tall), not overweight, has no past medical conditions. Always check with the doctor first. I have also found that a lot of the children's otc meds are now being made in tablet form...you just have to look for them as they are in demand and hard to find. :)

I agree with the fact that children's medicine just tastes nasty, like you I have tried them just to see why they would not take them and ewe I can see why. When you ask at the pharmacy they always tell you not to give them adult tablets. My daughter refuses to take liquids and usually throws up and it defeats the whole purpose. I was just wondering how old your son is that you gave the tablet to, I am always so nervous about doing that.

I have to agree with you there on the kid's version. Although the tablets are great and we do reccomend them to alot of our patients I can't for the life of me figure out why they make the children's taste so nasty. I just don't have the heart to make my little grandson take it either.
