When I come to Florida I like to take my mom to a light movie. Serious movies with tangled plots are difficult for her to understand. The fact the reviews weren't great for Mr. Woodcock didn't stop us. She loves Susan Sarandon and that was good enough for me. As it turned out we thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
A Closer View
The movie starts out by showing what for me was actually painful to watch - Billy Bob Thornton, Mr. Woodcock, as an abusive gym coach. Fast forward many years and one of the kids who got the brunt of the coach's wrath the most is a famous writer. John Farley played by Seann William Scott wrote Letting Go. This book seems to fit his life until he encounters a challenge that shows him how difficult that task can be.
When visiting his mom, Beverly Farley played by Susan Sarandon, and getting an award from his hometown she introduces him to her boyfriend, Mr. Woodcock. John then goes on a mission to break them up. I won't tell you the rest!
The movie is 87 minutes. It is rated PG-13 for some sexual content, language and a drug reference.
This is a comedy. I wasn't rolling in the floors but I was laughing especially when I heard my mom laugh. It sounds more serious than it is. I admit I had a hard time watching the boys get abused but had to get over that in order to enjoy the movie. It was entertaining and kept me awake. It will not win any awards for anything and you can wait for it on DVD!
