Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium —

Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium

Starring:  Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Jason Bateman

Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium is a magical toy store but it’s like the whistle in the Polar Express.  You can only experience the magic if you believe.

Mr. Magorium (Dustin Hoffman) believes that it time for him, after over 242 years, to “leave.”  He is leaving his store to his faithful assistant manager, Mahoney (Natalie Portman) who, along with a young boy who has made the Emporium his second home, knows what a magical place the Wonder Emporium is.  An accountant (Jason Bateman) enters and sees only “red” and surprise, doesn’t see that magic.

A real “Ahhhh” moment:

The young boy who “works” in Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium writes a note and holds it to the window where the accountant is working.

Boy: “Do you like to play checkers?”

Accountant: “I did when I was a kid.”

Boy: “Do you want to play now?”

Accountant: “I am working right now.”

Boy: “When you’re not working anymore?”

Accountant:  “I never stop working.”

Boy:  “Oh.  (with a sad face)

I once read a movie critic who said that Mr. Magorium wasn’t Dustin Hoffman’s best performance.  Well, that isn’t exactly an insult.  I still haven’t gotten over him in Kramer vs. Kramer or Rain Man. I will admit that Mr. Magorium’s eyebrows were overkill and the lisp was annoyingly unnecessary and yet, it is a fun, worthy movie.  Most of all, kids really like it.

-Parents should be ware that Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium does deal with death as Mr. Magorium prepares to die.

-I was really pleased that there was no effort to build in an adult romance.  Thank you!

-Sure, it was pretty predictable but aren’t happy endings usually?

My Viewpoint:  Our whole family enjoyed it and will most certainly watch it again.  Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium is predictable, yes, but fun and has a magical message for all of us.

Nice review...I actually have a favorite quote that came from that movie. When Mr. Magorium is saying goodbye, he tells Natalie Portman's character, "Your life is an occasion...rise to it." Sweet inspiration from a children's movie. It may have been predictable, but with all the negativity in the world, sometimes we neeed movies like this. Your 4 stars are right on!

I remember watching the previews for this but never ended up getting to see it. Maybe we will rent it. Thanks.
