Mr. Holland's Opus 1995  —

30 years in the life of  Glen Holland, a highs school music teacher is told in this sentimental but warm, rich and ultimately deeply moving film.

Holland (played by Richard Dreyfuss) only intends on being a teacher temporarily-you see he will be a great composer in the near future. but he needs money for himself and his very supporting wife, Iris  (Glenne Headley).

He doesn't realize that it is his destiny to teach.   What should be a joyous occasion, the birth of his son Cole, turns into another disappointment for Mr. Holland.  His son is dear.  His son will not be able to hear the brilliant composition Glen will someday write.

We watch this film slowly unfold into more than just a sweet sentimental somewhat predictable film.    The big events of the 60s and 70s are in the background as this troubled, conflicted man struggles to keep his own dreams alive and manages to inspire and instill confidence and worth in his students--even students that don't have gifts or much talent. He manages to give them the girt of self-esteem.

As you watch, you'll begin remembering the special teachers you encountered in your life and perhaps wonder what their private lives and what their personal ambitions might have been.

The film is perhaps too sentimental and most of theconflicts sem to melt away perhaps too nicely, but not all. . .  Michael Kamen does the score,  the screenplay is by Patrick Cheane Duncan.  It's a long 143 minute movie, and you'll want to watch it from start to finish...in one sitting so start it early enough to enjoy it all.

Richard Dreyfuss is more calm in his performance than usual and the film is all the better for it.  He's not understated, but he is not over the top as he sometimes can be either.

I was touched and moved and while I felt manipulated sometimes in rather saccharine sort of ways, over-all the film is an excellent one and certainly a good one to share with the entire family.
