Pros

Removed burnt plastic from pipes, Great Product, Works

While riding Lil' Blue the other day I had the misfortune of getting my pants burnt onto my nice chrome exhaust pipes. I was wearing a pair of Starter nylon/polyester based pants when I went to pick up my luggage rack. Well the wind whipped them around and at a light I was treated to the unmistakable smell of burning plastic. I was not happy at all and was staring at a large tennis ball sized glob of burnt on plastic.

I tried scraping it off but it was not doing much at all, so I set sail on the Internet highway in search of a way to remove it without damaging the chrome. I found some suggestions which included Oven Cleaner, Opps by Homex, 0000 grit Steel Wool, Fingernail Polish Remover and Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Pads. Well oven cleaner is very caustic and I about gagged using it with no success. Opps barely made a mark in the hard glob and evaporated very quickly. Steel wool no matter how gentle you are is going to scratch so that was not an option and fingernail polish remover evaporated just as the Opps did with no noticeable results, except I was getting high off the fumes and sick to my stomach.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Pads

This was the last idea I had found and with the failure of the others I figured it was just an idea by someone wanting to give false hopes as there were no Before/After pictures to back anything up as far as if it would work or not.

I grabbed a Magic Eraser Pad and wet it and set out to see if I could salvage my new Cobra Slip On Exhaust Pipes. After about 5 minutes I started to notice it was beginning to fade and I was getting hopeful. I continued to rub and was getting cramps in my fingers from exerting pressure on the pad. So I grabbed a detail brush and used it to apply pressure to the Magic Eraser.

I continued to see progress so I pressed on with my chore and within about an hour I had over 1/2 of it gone and no scratches in the chrome. By the end of my second hour I had a bright shiny exhaust pipe that earlier had an ugly dark brown glob of burnt plastic on it. I grabbed my chrome polish and gave the pipe a good polishing and sat back with a Big Smile on my face!!! It actually worked and even though it made my hand sore and my knees were screaming from sitting so long I was happy.

Bottom Line

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
is not just for those household cleaning jobs, it also removes burnt plastic from chrome exhaust pipes. If I hadn't seen it work I would not have believed such a soft surface could remove burnt on plastic and not scratch it either.

So for all those motorcycle owners out there that have had the misfortune of getting plastic stuck on your shiny chrome pipes there is now a way to get it off that is inexpensive and although takes a little elbow grease well worth the effort. A shop would have charged well over $100 to get it off but for less than $5 and 2 hours of my time I was able to claim Success!!

I use these all the time, but didn't know they'd work for something like this! AMAZING.

I think the trick is to not get it too wet, I just got it damp and even with all the scrubbing I did it lasted through the whole job. ;)

That was a wonderful outcome. I've tried this Eraser before, but it seemed to disappear in my grip before I was able to get anything clean. Maybe I'll have to try it again. Everyone raves about it. :)

Probably would as brake dust is a lot softer than burnt plastic. I am sure Scrappy would help too ;)

I wonder if this would work with my rims and break dust. I have on magic eraser at home...I want to give it a try :)

My sister clued me into these things, and I've been very impressed at their effectiveness against kid and dog grunge.
