He's my favorite comedian of ALL time.  Now today, I hear this news, and I'm shocked.  I'll have to listen more to the "alleged" details.  Your thoughts are welcome.

I think over the next week were gonna find out more details. It was great of him not to pay 2 million dollars to the guy blackmailing him. He wasn't married and didn't have his baby when he slept with the woman/women from his work. I still like him just the same, I think we all make mistakes and I won't stop watching him for it. I love him too!! My fav. is Craig Ferguson though...wooo so cute and funny... :)

Ditto KaciOhio :)  Couldn't agree more.  I'm anxious to hear more details about this bizarre story in the coming weeks.

I expect this behavior from others, but not HIM. I love David Letterman too. I sat in the audience at his tapings 4 times.

I wish I could see one taping, let alone 4!  I've watched Letterman since he was on mornings on NBC.  He got cancelled due to low ratings.

I love David Letterman and this does not affect the way I feel about him in any way! Amazes me how people think they can get away with extortion! I give David Letterman props for going to the proper authorities and helping to make sure this individual was caught!

It certainly won't be as funny to hear him lampoon other people in the press anymore regarding their scandals.  He cheated on his girlfriend for years, and now it has caught up with him.  I guess the question will become whether viewers can forgive him for his indiscretions in the long run, or if the fact that he had several affairs is going to really hurt him.

I don't give him a break just because he might not have been married at the time (facts still to be determined, who knows when he stopped said affairs).   I hate cheating and if my boyfriend had cheated on me prior to getting married, it wouldn't make it alright.

As far as "do I think less of him" or "will I stop watching"... honestly I don't currently watch that often, but this won't make me boycott him or anything. We do not know if his girlfriend/now wife knew about this.  She could have forgiven him already.  I don't usually let people's personal problems affect if I like their shows/movies or not - unless they do something that is just so wrong that I can't even look at them without being mad.

The sordid personal lives of public figures.  Since it was meant to be kept completely private and was only exposed because of a criminal act against him, we can judge how he's handling it.   He's being honest about it and that's commendable.   Of course having multiple affiairs with people who work for you, while  being engaged to someone else is a lousy thing to do.   Of course being as famous as Letterman is a difficult thing to do and he seems to have mended his ways.

Not really our business of course but we eat it up.  Makes good copy and water-cooler talk.

Next scandal....

Another celebrity having affairs. Is this really all that surprising?

I was of the mind that we can post about things that matter to us, like this particular comedian who has brought JOY and LAUGHTER into my life (and maybe even the lives of others) for nearly 30 years.

I actually took Rudi's comment to mean "why does the world care" not why the post. Most of the posts here are small talk, certainly not just this one.

I think Letterman was really funny back in the early 90's. I only watch it on Fridays now. He's really an interesting person, have never figured him out. I think he'll be okay in the end.

There's a celebrity tell-all blog I posed to already and I'll restate that I have very little - make that no - interest in the private lives of famous people. I only believe what I read in the Weekly World News anyway. With bigfoots, ET's and everything else going on there's just no time left for Dave.

I'm fully aware there are more important things going on in the world.

I think it's great he came forward. Haven't heard the whole story just from what I read here. But all in all, I would say this is a private matter between his wife and him (even if she was his girlfriend at the time..don't know). Their business not mine. I'm like Rudi, there are more important things going on in the world that need to addressed, talkened about, resolved. People's lives are on the lines. I didn't care that Clinton did what he did, just the fact he was a big B.S.er.

There are more important things in life that goes on and need attention, homelessness, hunger, makes your heartache. But alot of efforts are sent over sea's for other countries.....Why not start at home? We have plenty of people who need help here, like health care. I know got off the main subject. That is what is important, our own Americans!

I can't see the big deal over it. He wasn't married, had no kids at the time.  He work a ton of hours weekly, probably had no time for a personal life.  It wasn't harassment, the women aren't complaining.  I can't see why this is such a big deal.  Letterman is an awesome comedian.  I love his sense of humor.  I hope to see some amusing lines come out of this.

"I hope to see some amusing lines come out of this"

And we will.  He'll spoof more on himself than he ever did on anybody else...or than anyone else will try to spoof on him.

I thought Dave handled this very well.

Everyone I know in any type of law enforcement says the same thing. "The first time you pay a blackmailer, you become a "cash cow" for him, Admitting publicly that the allegations was his best option.

We will probably never know all the details & there is no reason that we should. This is between Dave/his wife/the other woman/God.

I have loved Dave since he was on the Mary Tyler Moore Variety Show - well before he took the hosting job on the show that followed Johnny Carson. He did  poke fun at political figures and actors/actresses. He poked even more fun at himself. He is a notoriously hard worker.

I don't know how much close scrutiny I could stand up under. I will watch him as long as I can.

Rudi...I say this to myself often whenever there are stories about celebrities running around the news.  "Paris Hilton is in jail again" (or whatever)... and the world should care why?  I'm not aiming this at anyone just the overall feeling of why do we (as a whole nation) have to air all the dirty laundry in the media.

As for Letterman... it happens.  as others have said he wasn't married at the time, he did come forward about it... after some assistance in doing so.  It really shouldn't have come to the public attention anyway.  it's not a public problem but because he's a celeb, everyone MUST know about it.  Personally I don't watch him, primarily because I'm not up that late but I also am not a fan of the talk show style shows either.

I think David Letterman did the right thing by just coming forward since it was going to come out anyway. He didn't sexually harass anyone and we have no idea when he had these affairs or whatever he had. I'm glad the guy was arrested and I'm shocked at who it is. As for judging David Letterman on his behavior, he did nothing illegal and obviously his wife is OK with him saying what he said in public.

He's has a lot of issues through the years. He had a stalker for ages until she killed herself (I think she killed herself) and he has been through other crazy things. I think he's funny, witty, and still very relevant and I'm glad he didn't give in to the demands. He was upfront with the public and I don't think we should judge him for we have no idea exactly what happened.

And honestly, as long it was consensual, I don't care what the heck he did off of the TV screen.

Yes, Patty, that lady stalker before the kidnap scare offed herself.  I remember being very scared for Dave during that time, as well as the attempted kidnapping of that sweet little boy who is Dave's world.

And I agree, he handled it very well...how many of us could do that?  I don't think I could.

My attitude is, "he who is without sin, cast the first stone".   Letterman handled that about as well as he could, and took all the wind out of that guy's sails.  I admire that he was willing to come out an admit his mistakes, risking ridicule to protect his family and the women he had sex with.  That's the sort of thing a real man does.

I missed you around here, Mike. Always the voice of reason. I agree obviously with what you said. The last I head, one woman came forward and said they dated for a year in the 90's. Not exactly blackmail material but I guess the 48 Hours procurer was desperate. And of course, I suppose having relations with people who work for you is considered a no no although it happens everyday in every profession.

I know David Letterman is American, and you were just looking for some humor. I usually find humor in a lot of things. I love to make people smile and laugh. I'm just stressed out right now. Everyone has an off day. I guess my marble got stuck and wasn't rolling around, to roll out some humor. I didn't mean anything mean Nancy. Can I blame it on PMS.....ha ha ha....or it's getting cold for me, or I take one step forward, and it goes back 2....I was just waking up, maybe I just feel like sure, he'll get some laughs out of it, but I don't know the whole story, and I don't care to. That's all. No ill will intended. I will see if my marble gets rolling again...so I can roll out something worth wild.  :) .... Take Care....darlyn

Sure Darlyn, you can blame it on PMS~!  Can I blame my meno?  I used to play marbles as a kid, and somewhere around here, I may have a bag still.

And Patty, the press will always try to dig a deeper trench for a person on a story like this as we know.   I haven't seen any harassment suits filed as of yet against Dave, and I don't think there will be.  It's a little too late for that now IMHO.

That alledged extortionist/producer plead not guilty yesterday.  He really thought he had it all down to get the $2 mil.  Dave's lawyer was smarter than that early on, allegedly caught him on tape ~ from what I heard on ABC news last night.   And as you might have heard Dave say himself, he feels sorry for the women that got entangled in this.  He's trying to keep the humor in it.   I don't put people on pedestals, no matter who they are.  I'm glad Dave came forward and blew the whistle on himself the way he did, to protect his family, like Mike commented above.  I don't feel his job on Late Night is at risk at all.  CBS has commented as such, at least up to this point.

Offbeat music and quirky humor will always be a salve for me, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that thought.  Without either, some of us might have withered away long ago.

Of course it takes two...  None of the woman ever complained or put in a sexual harassment complaint (at least that we know of).  So the women involved with Dave were just as complicit in the sleaziness of it as Dave was.   Did Dave take advantage of his position or did the women take advantage of Dave?   Both, I'm sure.    Since it doesn't sound like Dave propositioned anyone--that it was mutual or some women propositioned Dave...... well imperfect human beings...doing what they do...    I respect the way Dave is handling it.  (I've read five or six articles and this entire comment section).    Of course his ratings shot up I believe 38 percent.....  Ah... America!!!!  We love a good celebrity sex scandal......

I'd say more but my wavering attention span is now on Jon's appology to Kate (and I don't even follow that, the show or the drama....  there's a Real Housewife reality star that was killed in a bar, and someone said Marilyn and Kennedy had an affair... sheeeesh....

Chris, who are Jon & Kate?  I know about the Marilyn/JFK fling.  Is Real Housewives a show?

And Dave's ratings shot up?  How is that possible?

oh le scandal~!
