If you were to remake this movie today, which actress/actor would you cast in the main roles?

Haha, no it sounds like you want a movie where a guy ends up with lots of women :)

Ok, I would enjoy a remake today, as long as the right people were in the part.  However, I can't think of anyone right now that would be around the age Juila Roberts was that would be able to live up to the part.

How about Kate Beckinsale as the hooker, and Christian Bale as the millionaire?

Colin Firth as the millionaire. I'm not sure yet who could be the female lead.

See the reason it's hard for me to find a female lead for this is because you need someone who can act humble, act like they have low self esteem and act like they really are a sweet person underneath th hooker job!  The problem with a lot of starlets now-a-days is that they are really confident and a lot of movies portray these women being super confident and in charge (which is a great thing for society to see - but not great for this type of movie)

That is a VERY good point. The reason I asked this question, is because it was on the tube the other night and I watched it. Can you believe it's been 18 years? Wow!

Self confident in that she knew she was good at her job with a  certain toughness - she wouldn't kiss but still a certain softness then later vulnerability without being weak.

Anyone I can think of would be super confident like you said -or- too vulnerable.

The actress who had the lead in "Becoming Jane" could pull it off to a certain extent but I think she might be a bit too vulnerable...I'm not sure. We'll just have to audition her to find out!    : )

What do you think about the male lead?

The same as I said earlier.... Colin Firth. He's played millionaires with a varying range of parts and is good in romantic leads and I think he's really suited acertain debonaire quality, and good with that air of restraint and then also becoming more vulnerable.

Never heard of him before. Just did a google search and he has the look for sure, never seen him act though.

Woman-Drew Barrymore.  Millionaire-Russell Crowe.

Perry, you have asked a hard question. I just can't see anyone but Julia Roberts in it. I like either Daniel Craig or Christian Bale to play the millionaire role. The only actress I can think of that would be any good is Mandy Moore. She is tall (5'10") and pretty.

well, do you think the actress needs to be tall for this role? I would just assume good-looking, great smile.

18 years?? wow - No one could do that movie like Julie Roberts. There are Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore whom I could see. I love Richard Gere too much to think of anyone else;)

I can't see Drew Barrymore in the role, she is too silly.  Most the guys mentioned work well.  I think it's easier to find a guy who can play the rich guy then it is to find the girl :)

She's an older lady but I think Jaclyn Smith could pull off the role.  She is a very versatile actress and through the years has played some very humbling and risque roles.  She has played both the victim and the vilian.  And you must admit that she still looks great for a 60+ lady. For the man, I would choose James Brolin or John O'Hurley.  I just think they are both fine looking men and they can pull off the task of being superior and yet very needy and loving with a woman who is a hooker.

According to IMDb, Julia Roberts and Richard Gere were not the first choices for their roles in Pretty Woman. Meg Ryan and Molly Ringwald both turned down the role of Vivian, and Christopher Reeve and Al Pacino both turned down the role of Edward.

One other interesting thing about this movie. Remember the famous poster with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts back-to-back and Roberts holding Gere's tie? According to IMDb, that's Julia Roberts' head superimposed on the body of a model named Shelley Michelle. Weird!

I could easily see Sarah Michelle Gellar, Hillary Swank and/or Reese Witherspoon playing the role. A TV actress named Sarah Carter could do a nice job with the role, too. As for the guy, Robert Downey Jr., Hugh Grant and/or Daniel Craig (the new James Bond) would be great. Someone like Christian Bale would be an interesting wild card.

Edit: Meg Ryan also turned down the lead in Ghost. Considering how successful she's been, she's turned down some wildly successful films.

I agree with your ladies choice and say add Lacy Charbet to it.  Another good one for the male lead would be Dean Cain.  He has charm and charisma.

I totally forgot about Dean Cain. I was watching the Starter Wive on USA with Debra Messing. She would make a good Vivian.

And who should play the snotty lawyer? The original role was played by George Alexander, who went on to big things on Seinfeld. I suggest Jack Black (School of Rock, The Holiday), Seth Rogen (Knocked Up) or Zach Braff (Scrubs).

Edit: Just had an idea for Vivian, the Julia Roberts role -- Natalie Portman.

Edit2: Just had another idea for the Vivian role: Christina Ricci. And how about Rob Lowe for Richard Gere's role (Edward)?

OK, we should have some fun with this. (takes off glasses and lays them down on a nice, long, rounded conference table.) As the casting director I would like to say that Rob Lowe has now been cast as the main male lead. Having said that - The female role is still up in the air, but lets say Reese Witherspoon, and Kate Beckinsale are in the front running. We want someone who is not only NICE to look at but can act the role. Once we cast the female role will move on from there. Please keep in mind the female will be cast with Mr. Lowe, so were looking for on-screen sparks here!

Here's fun: Take Johnny Depp as he portrays himself in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and let him play the sales guy that assists Julia in getting all her clothes.  Can't you picture Depp asking Gere: "How much money...a lot of sucking up."

Not a Rob Lowe fan-

What about Cote de Pablo?

Were moving on to the Female now Meri but thanks for suggestion. I would like to have a cast in place by Monday if possible. Were working on a tight budget and must maintain a certain schedule.

I went with Lowe because of his overall appeal to the masses, body of work, and look.

I will pick the Female tonight. As I mentioned before the 2 best runners are Reese and Kate. Please give your pick and please keep in mind not everyone will like the overall cast when finished. :) This is just for fun, and after this one maybe someone would like to pick "Their" movie to cast. So, after tonight we will move on to the supporting roles and should be able to call it a wrap on Monday. Thanks!

Cote de Pablo would be playing the female role.  She plays Officer David on NCIS.
If I had to choose between Kate or Reese I would choose Reese.

Sorry, I did not recognize the name (very embarrassed) I will research Cote de Pablo for sure!! The deadline is 7 pm eastern, will announce lead around 8.

Quick note: I have something really cool planed when we reach our full cast, just wait!

Ok, I have researched Cote de Pablo and all I can say is great find Meri! She is added with the others for now. She has the look for sure! Her background is mostly all TV though, but that should not really count against her to much when you consider not many people heard of Roberts before the movie came out.
