Avatar (2009)

Avatar (2009)
Avatar is a visual triumph!
fun loving, a movie buff, into action flicks, DVD collector, twenty something

DEC

2009

My family and I went and saw the Avatar movie this past weekend. I have to say, Avatar certainly lived up to its $400 million budget! I was impressed by the computer graphics, which were definitely innovative. The acting was good, and I liked the storyline.

Avatar is about a planet called Pandora. In the year 2054, Americans have established a base on Pandora and are mining a special resource. Marines are used on the base for protection purposes, because the native populations are unwelcoming. Scientists are also on the base, attempting to research the planet. Their research is done using avatars,...

Crimson Tide

Crimson Tide
A Submarine Movie This Bubblehead Can Enjoy
into action flicks, a homeowner, into movies that tell a great story, a fan of clever plots, a DVD collector

DEC
23
2009

Bottom-Line: Crimson Tide is now one of my favorite must see once-a-year movies.

Directed by action junkie Tony Scott (Top Gun, Man on Fire, Spy Game), Crimson Tide revives and old enemy (Russia) for some tomfoolery and high intrigue in the middle of the Pacific Ocean onboard the nuclear-powered ballistic submarine U.S.S. Alabama.  The "Bama" has been sent to counter possible first strike moves by a rouge Russian rebel leader who has managed to seize a Russian nuclear base on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula in the Northwestern Pacific.  The U.S.S. Alabama is led by a no nonsense,...

Ride Lonesome (1959)

Ride Lonesome (1959)
Solid Randolph Scott Western with superb supporting cast
a Movie Guru, a lover of quirky unique films, a fan of movies that take chances, into movies that tell a great story, a movie connoisseur

DEC

2009

Budd Boetticher made at least 7 several solid Westerns with Randoph Scott during the 1950s.  One of the first big screen CinemaScope pictures he directed was 1959's  Ride Lonesome.  It's a solid fairly simple Western dealing with classic Western themes.  Well cast, acted and directed, Ride Lonesome's screenplay is solid and spare.  The story slowly unfolds for us, but we are never bored.

Brigade (Randolph Scott) is taking dangerous outlaw Billy John (James Best) to Santa Cruz where he will most certainly be hanged for shooting a man in the back.  We don't yet understand why he seems to want...

Classic Movies, Turner Classic Movies Christmas & Sherlock Holmes Movie Marathons Dec 24 to 26 2009
Holiday Movies and dozens of Sherlock Holmes movies too!!!
very picky about kids films, going to try new things constantly, indie bookstore lover, Northwest resident, a Movie Guru, a fan of clever plots, a lover of quirky unique films, a cult film connoisseur

DEC

2009

TCM, cables classic movie station has programmed a marathon of under the radar holiday movies followed by around 20 Sherlock Holmes movies airing December 24th through the 26th.

The Christmas Eve program begins with a wonderfully entertaining romantic comedy written by Preston Sturges and starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray.  It's 1940's Remember the Night .  MacMurray plays an Assistant District Attorney who falls in love with the shoplifter (Stanwyck) he is prosecuting.    He doesn't want the woman to spend Christmas in jail waiting for her trial so he bails her out and takes...

Finding Nemo

Finding Nemo
Finding Nemo was a wonderful movie for all ages.
fun loving, watching with kids

DEC
22
2009

Finding Nemo was a wonderful movie. This movie really helps children to think big in life. It shows them that if they set their mind to do something that they can reach whatever it is they want to do. The story line was wonderful in my opinion. The characters were very likable. In a way the movie also shows how things work in nature, you know life the food chain I guess you would say. The graphics were also very good. I believe this movie had a wonderful list of people to do the voices. Ellen Degenerous did an outstanding job with the voice of Dory. She played that chararcter absolutely wonderful....

"AVATAR"

"AVATAR"
Not what it is touted as being"
a movie buff, Gay

DEC
22
2009
"Avatar" is a movie of too much and too many. In the beginning there is a reference to "The Wizard Of Oz", James Cameron's, the director and writer of Avatar, favorite movie, when one of the characters says, "We're not in Kansas anymore," and he makes sure you aren't. The main thing I was looking for was how was this movie going to change the making of movies in the future as it was being highly touted to. (Did I use 'was' enough? Too much?) Yes the use of 3D (and this movie must be seen in 3D as 2D doesn't add to the movie at all) is exciting in parts and subtle in others but nothing we haven't... read full review »

Denise Austin's videos demonstrate 20 years of fitness video teaching experience. Denise Austin's workout videos and dvds are known for their high energy and non-stop enthusiasm. Denise's exercise video personality is bubbly and super motivating. Two 20 minute aero tone interval segments followed by a flexibility routine. The variety is endless  from dance aerobics and kickboxing to sports drills and vertical leaps; from pliés and lunges to chest presses and curls. The high energy and counted out reps are boot  camp style, but Denise is never in your face.Instead, she motivates you with a positive,...

Avatar (2009)

Avatar (2009)
"Avatar" 3D spectacular, takes the medium to another level.
a movie buff

DEC
22
2009

All the media hype for James Cameron's "Avatar" may have seemed excessive in the few weeks leading up to the debut. So I cruised through many web pages devouring critic's reviews and digesting magazine articles to find out just what I might expect before entering the theatre. Many a film has had the term "ground breaking" attached to it only to find it just couldn't live up to it's billing. I was determined to view this film in the best possible venue; IMAX 3D. The closest theatre is 45 minutes away so I went on-line and bought tickets, printed from my computer and when I arrived bypassed the lines...

It's Complicated

It's Complicated
A Must See

DEC
22
2009

I got a chance to see a sneak preview of the movie "It's Complicated" yesterday. I had to drive an hour from my house to go see it but it was well worth the drive.  The movie was very funny.

The movie shows the consequences of having an affair with a married man (Jake) who is now 58 years old. The twist is the affair is with the ex-wife (Jane)also 58 years old. Jake originally cheated on his ex-wife with his current much younger wife Agnus then cheats on Agnus with his ex-wife Jane. Jake and Jane think it is OK to have the affair because it feels right and they were previously married....

Die Hard 2: Die Harder

Die Hard 2: Die Harder
Willis is watchable in 1990's otherwise too formulaic Die Hard 2
a movie buff, Film music lover, Long-time reviewer, into movies that tell a great story, a writer, Journalism major, history minor, Movie guru

DEC
22
2009

One of the predictable consequences of the success of 1988's Die Hard was 20th Century Fox's decision to greenlight Renny Harlin's Die Hard 2: Die Harder, a spectacularly violent sequel to Bruce Willis' star-making hit about a brave, wise-cracking police detective who goes mano-a-mano with a band of sophisticated criminals in order to save his estranged wife (Bonnie Bedelia) and other civilians.

The studio's big shots, of course, rarely see movies as works of art but rather as investments for which they expect at least some profit, so when a stand-alone film such as Airport, Jaws, Smokey and the...

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes
Lackluster blockbuster
a movie buff

DEC
22
2009

Guy Ritchie's big budget Sherlock Holmes pays tribute to the literary icon in many ways, while at the same time trying to present a fresh story in a fresh way. One has to remember that the character's creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was so fed up with the runaway success of his own stories that he gave carte blanche for other creators to use him in any way they saw fit, and thus any interpretation of Holmes is as valid as any other. This, along with the rich variety of Doyle's stories and the character's innate vitality, has made him one of the most popular characters to appear on screen. This...

It's Complicated

It's Complicated
Get your girlfriends together and go see this movie!
watching chick flicks, fun loving, a comedy fan, budget conscious, a pet owner, a busy person, into trying new things, a bargain hunter

DEC
22
2009

I went to a pre-screening of It's Complicated starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin last night and I have to say that this was one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time.

The basis of the story is that Jane (Streep) and Jake (Baldwin) are a divorced couple going on 10 years apart, with three grown kids. Jake is remarried to a woman half his age and Jane is still single. They end up at their son's college graduation sharing an innocent meal. A couple of bottles of wine and some dancing later they end up in bed together and start having an affair. Throw in Steve Martin...
