good medicine but can it harm my child

When my son has a high fever i want to obliviously get it down quickly.  But when all kinds of reports say i could do doing harm to my child by just giving him the medicine, i become very hesitant to give it to him.  I usually give him a little less then recommended but then his fever takes a while to come down.  I prefer to give him Motrin children's because it seems to work the best.  Until they come out with something better with less risk then i am sticking with the Motrin.  Tylenol works but not that well on child in my opinion.
