Well, another Fourth of July has "bit the dust" as they used to say in the old Western's. The barbeques are over, likewise the fireworks, and the dogs have calmed down again. Alas, the "A Capitol Fourth" concert broadcast from Washington is also a memory but as far as music is concerned, it is possible to get that Fourth of July feeling any day of the year by listening to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's "God Bless America", a collection of 23 patriotic hits. Even if you think you're not into the patriotic music thing, you will probably love this ... especially the opening shot which is a soaring rendition of "America the Beautiful."
The other selections run the gambit from "Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean" to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" including folk favorites like "Down in the Valley," "Shenandoah" and "When I First Came to This Land". There is even a roster of rousers by George M. Cohan ... "Over There", "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "The Yankee Doodle Boy", along with Irving Berlin's "This is the Army, Mr. Jones" and his hauntingly beautiful and rarely performed "Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor."
The recorded performances of these patriotic favorites included the alternate efforts of two choir directors, three organists, Robert Merrill (Baritone), two orchestras, and of course the great Mormon Tabernacle Choir. As always, their performance is guaranteed to thrill and inspire ... angels could have done no better.
All of this is available for only $7.95 from Amazon.com.
A Happy Fourth of July to all and ... regardless of whatever problems we have to cope with ... I think it's a good time of year to remember the famous tee-shirt inscription ...
"If you're lucky enough to be an American, you're lucky enough!"
