Let me preface this review by saying that I am a Jonathan Kellerman fan.  I have read over eight of his books and almost always enjoy them.  However, his book Monster, is his worst book yet and so bad, I couldn't even finish it.

It is extremely rare for me to quit on a book.  I will usually finish a book just in case the end makes up for the rest.  Since Monster is written by an author I almost always enjoy, I gave the book two chances before giving up on it.

The first chance was about a year ago.  I tried and tried to get into it and couldn't, so I put it back on my bookshelf to try at a later time.  At the time I thought that perhaps the reason why I couldn't get into it was because I was in the mood to read a different kind of book.  Now a year later, I tried the book again and realized that this is just a bad book.  I normally read a book in the span of a week or two.  After about 6 weeks, I was a quarter into the book.  I just couldn't get into it.

Monster is for those familiar with Jonathan Kellerman, an Alex Delaware novel.  The main characters Alex, Milo and Robin that are in his continuing Alex Delaware series are in this book too.  The main concept of this book is that there have been two similar murders that seem to be connected, but besides a mental hospital, Alex and Milo can't seem to find a theory as to what the motive might have been.  Alex of course is helping Milo with his psychological background and the two of them join forces to try to find who the killer or killers are.  Unfortunately, there is nothing about this book that lures you in.  I always enjoy a good murder/mystery, but this book neglected to capture my attention both times I attempted to get into it.  After six weeks, I am finally giving up on it and don't even care to see how it ends.

The Scoop!

Even if you are a Jonathan Kellerman fan like myself, I do not recommend this book unless you are willing to go the extra mile by reading the whole, boring book.  I will continue to read the other books in the Alex Delaware series in hopes that this book is an exception to the writer's usual great story.

I think the problem is that these writers sometimes get so successful that whatever they write someone else is willing to print even if it may be a CLUNKER!

I like the Alex Delaware series so much, I haven't wanted to read one of the Petra books because he's not in them. I also like Milo and Robin since they are his main characters in the Alex Delaware books. Maybe I'll give one of the Petra ones a try. Thanks for the info!

Oh yes, that was the first thing that got me hooked on him. I also like the Petra o'Connor books too. Some of the newer books written with other others have been a little disappointing but it seems he is doing some "mentoring"

I have read a lot of his Alex Delaware series and this is the first time this has happened to me with one of his books. Have you also read his other Alex Delaware books?

I have read it and agree, if you can't get into it in the first couple of tries probably not your "thing" It was not one of his best.

To be honest, even if someone told me the book had an awesome ending, I still wouldn't pick it up again. It has already sucked up too much of my time :)

I wonder if anyone at Viewpoints has read the book and could give you some insight on why perhaps you should finish the book. You know, like me with the Twilight movie. I didn't understand all the hype when I watched it the first time by myself but when I watched it again with my brother and later with Debbie then I enjoyed it a whole lot more. I had to feed off of their enthusiasm.
