Monk's Music: Thelonious Monk and Jazz History in the Making is a rewarding read if you are interested in jazz, its history and development, or Monk, his music and influence on the genre.
Well researched and referenced, but not so "scholarly" that it's impenetrable, Monk's Music will draw you in to the life and music of this jazz legend, and his influence on the development of jazz.
Highly recommended.
The author's website is at the University of Illinois, there's a bio here: http://www.music.uiuc.edu/facultyBio.php?id=80
