I love brown rice, but I don't like to cook it.  It takes so much longer to cook than white rice, I usually don't bother with the brown.  I recently discovered Minute Ready to Serve Brown Rice at the grocery store and had to check it out for myself.

The package claims to be ready in 60 seconds without having to add any ingredients.  That sounded too good to be true.  Wholesome brown rice, ready in one minute?  A package of Minute Ready to Serve Brown Rice includes (2) 4.4 ounce cups.

I followed the directions and removed the film at the top of the cup and cooked it in the microwave for one minute.  I removed it from the microwave and skeptically took a bite.  I couldn't believe it - it tastes just like the brown rice you cook on the stove for what seems like forever.  I was amazed.  I predicted it to turn out like those bags of rice you boil in water  - they never tasted like real rice to me.  The Minute Ready to Serve Brown Rice has the same taste and texture that traditionally cooked brown rice has, but without the wait!

One of the plastic cups is a perfect single serving.  Since you only get two cups in a package, you better be cooking for two or stocking up on your Minute Ready to Serve Brown Rice!  These aren't cheap either.  You are definitely paying for convenience here, whether or not it is worth it is up to you.  The only disadvantage I can see to the Minute Ready to Serve Brown Rice over regular brown rice is that there is sunflower oil and salt added to the rice which increases the sodium, fat and calories.

Minute Ready to Serve Rice is also available in these flavors:

  • White Rice
  • Chicken Rice
  • Brown & Wild Rice
  • Yellow Rice

Ingredients: long grain brown rice, water, sunflower oil, salt, soy lecithin

Nutrition (1 container): 170 calories, 4.5g fat, 175mg cholesterol, 28g carbs, 2g fiber

The Scoop!

Since the Minute Ready to Serve Rice is pricey, I wouldn't waste my money on the white rice, but I find it worth the price for the brown rice.  It saves so much time and tastes just as good.

I know about the texture thing, remember me with the various pastas? I guess I just can't tell a difference in rice.

Yes, I have had the rice bags you boil. I don't like them because the texture is different from traditional white rice. I am weird about texture :)

Have you ever tried the boil-in-a-bags? I love those because they are perfect for smaller servings and they cook in about 5 minutes. Also, because the rice is in a bag I don't have to stand over it and stir it.

Okay, I have caught up on all reviews so I am going to sign off for a while and read One Little Thing. Talk to you later, Gigi
