Our home is a paradise because of the fact that we have mini-dachshunds. It started out 12 years ago. Our daughter mentioned, only in passing, how sweet little dogs could be. Her new husband searched high and low and surprised her with Clifford, a 4 month old mini-doxie. Within 2 weeks, they had to go to a two week training for the National Guard. We accepted our duty with happy faces. Clifford was delightful and fun and perfectly house-broken by the time they got home. After less than 2 weeks at home, they came to realize they just didn't have time to care for Clifford or play with him as he needed. He came to stay permanently. After about a year, I decided by myself to seek out a playmate and Gillian came into our lives. Since Clifford had been neutered, another male was needed so we could have puppies, as now we had grandchildren who should be educated about the life cycle. Soon, we were called upon to rescue a puppy from starvation and abuse. Libby has become a wonderful pet and a terrific mommy. Every now and then, another batch of puppies would be born or someone else would have puppies unlike any we had. We now have 9----7 females and 2 males. They live in our family room. There is a baby gate and they respect that. Gillian sleeps with me overnight as my husband works third shift. They travel with us; some well-others not so well. They are comical, loving, enegetic, little dogs. They are perfect for apartments as well as big houses. They love to run and are really fast on short distances. It is glorious to watch their long ears flying behind them. Dachshunds are burrowing dogs and they actually love their pet taxis. We have a bank of nine under our bay window! We feed them twice a day----AM + PM. They get specifically measured amounts of IAMS--vet recommended, vet approved. They love it. Some doxies, just like people, tend to become overweight. You have to keep an eye on the snacks you provide. We use baby carrots, cheese, turkey and Alpo Liv-a-snaps. They also think oyster crackers are a treat..... They are a super clean dog, requiring infrequent bathing. We have only had 2 of our dogs have any problem with their backs. One recuperated just fine with some medication from the vet and the other had a massage therapy that really worked out great and was very reasonable. So, there is no grooming, few baths, love their kennels, love their masters, are great with kids, don't require much space----what better dog could there possibly be?
