Mindy and Grant Searcey - May Birthstone Bar Necklace —

After buying bridesmaid gifts for my sister and cousin last month, I was fresh out of ideas for what to get them this month for their birthdays.  I turned to my trusted standby, Uncommongoods.com, a site that has all sorts of interesting and unique presents that you can buy without worrying if the person already has one.  I really liked the look of the Mindy and Grant Searcey May Birthstone Bar Necklace in the catalog and on the UncommonGoods web site, so I ordered one for my sister.

This item is a long, thin, rectangular pendant that has four words (spirit, body, growth, mind) stamped on the sides.  There also is a small emerald attached to the top of the pendant to accentuate the fact that this necklace is designed for a particular birth month.  The sterling silver chain, though thin and delicate-looking, feels sturdier than the silver Tiffany chains that hold the various pendants that my husband has bought me over the years.  Obviously, the Birthstone Bar Necklace that I am describing is specific to May.  Pendants for other months have different stones and words stamped on the bar.

My sister is very into holistic health, so I knew she would appreciate a birthstone pendant like the Mindy and Grant Searcey May Birthstone Bar Necklace.  At $70, it seemed a bit expensive, but I was willing to spend the money on her.... and then I opened up the package from UncommonGoods.  The pendant was lovely and shiny, but the lettering for each word was crooked and looked like it was hastily done.  Perhaps that was the intentional design, but I'd expect that kind of loose lettering on something that cost $20.  For $70, I was expecting something that looked much more crisp and clean.  I am very disappointed with this necklace and will be returning it to UncommonGoods tomorrow.

This Birthstone Bar Necklace was a huge disappointment.  I loved the idea of it, but the pendant looked cheap and hastily-made once I saw it in person.  Save your money.

I have one of these bars, and love it. If you want a machine to spit out mass-produced jewelry like nabisco does crackers, then I suppose this hand-stamped, hand made human-crafted jewelry is not for you. Straight lettering on artistic jewelry as a measure of worth seems akin to expecting a quality hand-made bread to have the uniform shape of wonder bread. I love my necklace.

You obviously don't get it... the value of HANDMADE... and you definitely have it backwards. These necklaces are individual works of art. Each piece is cast individually - each letter stamped individually - no two exactly alike. The fact that the are NOT perfect is what you pay more - not less - for. If you want perfectly aligned letters, each at exactly the same depth, each with the same spacing, (and each piece looking just like the next) I suggest you purchase mass-produced products at a lower price point. Those are the ones that look perfect - and cheap.

I have a little eBay store, and I'm proud to have found just such items for my listings. Handmade/hand-stamped jewelry and sculpture are very popular these days. There are several U.S. artists who are creating thoughtful, inspirational, wearable art and usable items that are appreciated - and even collected - by many. I'm constantly re-ordering and special ordering stock for my customers, who obviously get it... the value of handmade.

It doesn't look like they paid much intention to quality. You're right, it might have been intentional, but it looks bad.
