I have instituted a television and computer game free hour and a half with my children every night when I come home from work. During that time, we can play with toys, read books, play board games, color or paint. I usually like to do something that we all can do together, so neither my 2-year-old or 4-year-old feels like they're not getting enough "Mommy Time."
Over the past week, we've played dominos, colored in our various coloring books and stood on the porch blowing bubbles. Today, I wanted to try a board game. I wanted to buy Twister, figuring that my two little ones would enjoy tumbling over each other trying to touch the colored squares but that game cost nearly $23!! My eyes wandered over to Candy Land Wheel which featured three things that would make it a hit: a recognizable brand; a spinner; and no reading.
Candy Land Wheel is a very simple spin and match game using the Candy Land characters. Each player gets 8 cards featuring the faces of different Candy Land characters. Players first roll a die with colored sides. Next, the spinner is rotated based on the die roll. The spinner will indicate the matching character, and each player has to rid themselves of the cards that has the character's face on it. The first player who gets rid of all their cards win.
My daughters and I played 4 times in a row, and we each won once. I had to help my 2-year-old with the matching because she just wanted to throw away cards. However, she was very game in allowing me to help her spin the wheel. She threw the jumbo sized die very well, and she recognized all the colors. My 4 year old was a pro after her first turn.
I think we're going to get a lot of use out of this board game during Mommy Time on rainy and chilly nights. It is definitely worth the $10 I paid for it. If you have older children, they can play by themselves without your involvment. I say, get them invovled with the classic games and books while they still think it is fun! (On aside, we do play the Wii Sports together. I'm just happy that my kids are now old enough that we can all have fun together as a family.)
