There are a few things to think about before you decide if you want to spend the money on an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

* Are you into playing games with friends online?

* Do you have a netflix, hulu or other streaming media subscription?

* Is the Xbox 360 (or Xboxone) your ONLY console to get streaming media on?

If you answered "yes" to one of these questions, then you may find it worth your money to invest in a year subscription to Xbox Live Gold.

Gaming with friends is great and if you and your friends have chosen the xbox as your prefered console then you WILL NEED Xbox Live Gold to be able to play with them, or anyone else for that matter. If you enjoy playing with others then you will want to get this.

If you intend to watch any of your subscription based streaming services though your xbox, you will need a gold subscription.

Xbox live generally works well when playing games online, though your experience will vary from game to game depending on the games servers (or if they connect to a "host" ie another player). It will also depend on your connection speed as well as the speed of others playing (most importantly the "host's" speed). This is going to be true of every game on every system and overall xbl handles things well.

My qualms with the subscription are as follows:

1. Even though you have paid for the service you are still bombarded by loud unwelcome ads. It would be nice if you could turn off the ads if you have a paid subscriptions.

2. Startup is SLOW. The system starts up slowly because of the ads and extra things. It makes it irritating to watch your streaming service because it takes a while to load. Part of this is not live itself, it's the system, HOWEVER when not connected to live things seem to move faster (presumably because of the ads).

3. You are basically paying twice if you plan to just use the subscritption for streaming services. You are better off using another console (Wii, PS3) or getting a Roku box, or a dvd/bluray player with streaming capabilities. You can get a Roku box for less than a years subscription to XBL Gold.

Microsoft has started offering two free games a month for Gold members, which can be a nice bonus if you are looking to get some older titles. However Playstation Plus, which is the paid subscription service for the PS3 offers more free games a month to subscribers. Also with the PS3 you don't have to have a paid connection to use your streaming services.

So take into account how much you will use the service for playing online, and how much you will use it for just watching subscription based services (you will be surprised but many people end up using their xboxes as media players more than for actual gaming). If you are just going to use it for watching your streaming services save the wear and tear on your system and get a Roku box or other device.

As far as subscription based services go Playstation Plus seems to be a better deal. But ideally you should just cut the extra fee's, play online with a PS3, or get a Roku or other device for streaming media.

The best part about XBOX Live is the ability to connect with others and play games you enjoy together. The worst part? The price goes up almost every year, and the server just cannot handle the load of people that get on there for some of the more popular games, like HALO. It will slow down, disconnect people, or randomly not allow you to sign in, and this is a frequent problem. Not a, "On my end DSL problem" but a "On Microsoft's end why won't they fix it when they know how many millions play on there" problem.

Its a great idea, but it would be even better if they'd go the route of Sony, and make online gaming completely free. The concept of Microsoft having several levels of membership is silly, when no one is going to get the free account when they can't play online. That's teh whole reason they jion, to play and connect with others.

If the price were less (or free, like Sony does) and the server capable of handling the always heavy load, would be better.

Too Much Money for Good Concept

By

from Utah

Comments about Microsoft - Xbox Live:

The concept itself is great. It's wonderful to be able to connect online, access a gaming profile on someone else's console, download games, etc. But X-box live is ridiculously overpriced. They offer a wide variety of apps (mlb.tv, redbox, internet access, etc), but they want you to pay a monthly access fee to be able to use them. Our dvd/blueray player that cost less than half of what the X-box costs includes most of the same apps for free. As long as we bought the player and have an Internet connection, then we can access the rest of the apps. But Microsoft wants you to pay a lot for the console, and then pay an ongoing subscription fee to be able to access many of the things that they promote the console for doing. It's a great idea to include those things, but it is simply a money grab for them to make the most money out of it. I understand that their goal is to make money, but they should keep the system in line with what other companies have.

You get what you pay for

Comments about Microsoft - Xbox Live:

Xbox live is the great service that is required for many great features on the xbox 360 and xbox One. Many people have complained that it is not free like it is on the Playstation 3. All I have to say is I am happy to pay for a reliable service. It is never down and always working extremely well and earns me access to many free streaming options. I recommend this service.

A must-have for all Xbox users

Comments about Microsoft - Xbox Live:

I have had an Xbox Live gold membership for as long as I have had my Xbox. I think it is necessary to have to be able to fully enjoy your gaming console and games. This allows you to play online with other people and to connect to your friends and play with them. It also allows you to connect to them and be able to talk while you are playing. Having Xbox Live turns your console into more than just a gaming product. It allows you to surf the internet and watch shows on sites such as YouTube and Netflix. I would not have nearly as much fun playing my games if I didn't have the online access that Xbox Live provides for me. I always buy the twelve month membership each time and just use the renewal cards when my membership is about to expire. But Xbox also allows you to renew through the console, which is probably more convenient for most people. The only thing that I don't like is that sometimes my internet access is slow or I will disconnect from my friends while I am playing. But even with these problems I will always continue to get my Xbox Live membership.

Best way to have fun!

Comments about Microsoft - Xbox Live:

Xbox live. That's all there is to say. Haha, but really xbox live is a great investment for any of you guys who want to have fun and get the best bang to your buck. Let me start off by saying that I have xbox live, and I love it! I get to game with all my friends and even meet new ones! With xbox live gold come perks. You get to use the apps silver members cant use. Some of these apps include netflix, huluplus, and youtube. Another perk is that you get to talk to your friends in parties, and actually play in online games. Some people only get xbox live to use the apps, but that's ok. It's totally up to you on what you use it for. Now as much as I love it, there are a few downfalls. The main one is pay to play. You have to pay to play online each month. If you're looking for free I suggest you stop reading here and go play the ps3. Another downfall is that you have to pay to change your name (Gamertag). Don't worry though, your first one is free! Other than those two minor details, the xbox live is great! Go play now!

XBox Live is amazing.

Comments about Microsoft - Xbox Live:

I think that Microsoft put a good bit of software into the Xbox with Live. It is a very fun thing to use to talk to friends and play games with thousands of people on the internet. It is amazing the amount of things you can find on Xbox Live, from games to wallpapers, and Netflix to Amazon. It is one of the best decisions they made recently.

Opens up a completely new Xbox experience

By

Comments about Microsoft - Xbox Live:

While a Live membership is not a necessity it does open up so many other options for entertainment. Many games are somewhat pointless without Live and most of the apps aren't available without it. We use Live for not only games, but Netflix as well which allowed us to get rid of the more expensive cable package. You can also purchase points to allow for game downloads, movie rentals, and extras for your avatar and games. (Those are available with Silver as well) Online game play gives you an entirely new experience on any game, allowing you to play real time against real players and even communicate with them. You can open your own session on most games and invite friends to play with you from any location. The experience really is worth the purchase expense, plus the other entertainment options available from your system. Purchasing one year at a time is not terribly expensive and I believe it really pays off for the endless hours of entertainment you can receive in return.

A Fun way to maximize your gaming experience

Comments about Microsoft - Xbox Live:

Prepare to journey into an endless stream of entertainment! Whether it is playing a game with a stranger across the world or turning your Xbox 360 into an entertainment center. Netflix, Hulu, HBO go, etc. are all here to keep you completely satisfied no matter your particular taste when it comes to entertainment. I was a person who first thought, " Online gaming is a waste of time...", I didn't realize the magnitude of options available to me concerning not only downloadable content but entertainment and complete internet access. The web browser isn't up to snuff but that's a forgivable flaw seeing as everything else is above average. I would recommend this to anyone who is on the fence about online gaming because it's so much more. The extent of your fulfillment is only a purchase or upgrade away. Don't just take my word for it.... take a chance and wonder how you ever existed without it.

Xbox unLive

By

Comments about Microsoft - Xbox Live:

Xbox Live is not what it used to be. The live has drastically gone through many lives or tranformations over the years from a simple, multi-player chat experience to a mutli-media conglomeration.

I thoroughly enjoyed connecting with people in the early days and gaming with them over the years. The game connections were not as good then as they are now, but the overall experience was far better then.

Live does offer the opportunities video gamers have longed for over the years. The opportunity to play different people all over the world right from your living room sofa. To be able to share a game experience with someone in China, Germany or Alaska from Texas is something unheard of in my early days of gaming.

The experience has changed into a full media outlet with party chats, party movie viewing and a plethora of other options. For some the Live concept is confusing while others enjoy the array it provides.

Sometimes, keeping it simple is the best option. But progress is a subjective....subject.

I love Xbox Live!

By

Comments about Microsoft - Xbox Live:

So I have been on Xbox live for over 2 years now, and will continue to use Xbox Live for as long as I can stay loving their service. I mainly started using the Xbox Live service to be able to connect and play games online with my friends, and it sure does that great. I have met a lot of new friends and had a ton of amazing experiences using Xbox Live. I love the fact that I can have parties and just invite all of my friends and be able to talk to all of them at once while playing my favorite games. I enjoy the Xbox Live Marketplace. Being able to purchase and download games and music right to my Xbox is an awesome feature. I also love the new apps feature Xbox has added to live. I can download and use tons of cool apps such as Netflix, Hulu, Twitch, Internet Explorer, and much more. Xbox Live delivers a great entertainment to my home and to tons of others. I highly Recommend using Xbox Live or at least Trying it out, you won't regret it.
