Microsoft Windows XP Professional w/ Service Pack 2 — 

this is probably the best operating system on the market at this time for the everyday user.  vista uses too much memory and will require massive upgrades for stable/quality performance.  and all operating systems before this do not utilize the memory enough or o not run as efficiently.  mac operating systems are fine if you are into that sort of thing, but they do not provide a functioning environment for deeper computer work, such as development.
