The community is split on Microsoft’s newest premiere Operating System (OS) Windows Vista Ultimate. While one reviewer praised Vista Ultimate, calling it "the best OS ever from Microsoft, period,” another reviewer called it “one of the worst operating system ever!!!” Still another reviewer praised the OS as “really easy to use,” while yet another derided the OS stating that “if you have (Windows) XP keep it. I read the other reviews. Being a "computer professional" for over 25 years, I have heard this same sort of whining before. I think the same people that love their XP complained about XP and wanted to keep 98 when XP first came out.

Let's face it, new operating systems have problems. Every iteration...

Microsoft is getting on my last nerve. I did the XP - big whoop on that. That knocked out my old printer. It was not compatible. Now, my computer went POOF, and Office Depot only had Microsoft Vista - no XP now. I even asked. Oh no. Microsoft is selling Vista operating systems - suddenly and totally....

Okay, I'll admit it; I was one of the computer geeks who were (very) excited about Microsoft's much hyped follow on to Windows XP, Windows Vista.  I was after all a Beta tester and I noticed little niggling things about the Operating System (OS) during that testing, but I was sure they would be addressed upon final release of the OS.  I was only partially right!

I decided to install Windows Vista Ultimate on my primary workstation at home, a Hewlett Packard d520 mini-tower with the following specifications:

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 Processor @ 1.60GHz, 533MHz FSB, 512MB L2 Cache

Memory: 1.5GB...

I think with all the craze to make an operating system look nice, I believe that functionality is all the matters.  Don't get me wrong, Vista is astheically pleasing, very functional with the sidebar that you can add things like a schoolhouse clock or system monitors.  My objection to Vista is that it is a memory hog.  When purchasing a new computer or upgrading your current one, you need to have AT LEAST 1GB of memory in order for this operating system to be viable.  I've seen many computers that have Vista but with only 512MB of memory.  Of what I've observed that would be an absolute nightmare. ...

I have been using Windows Vista since the day it went RTM. As a Technet subscriber i get access to all the MS software as soon as they release it so i was eagerly awaiting Windows Vista so i could spend the weekend installing it on my new 160 GB laptop harddrive!

I promptly downloaded the Ultimate edition (all 4GB of it!) and Office 2007 Ultimate (another 4GB) and set about installing it at the first opportunity!

The installation seems to be a lot faster than XP, however this could be due to the faster harddrive and DVD ROM drive that I installed the day before.

Windows was finally installed and I...

Let me start off by saying that if you don't know your gigabytes from your gigahertz then this product is not for you, plain and simple. The ultimate version of Microsoft's latest operating system is pricey, chock full of features and aimed at the computer professional. I, like so many other power users, frankly am tired of the whining. You can't install Vista on your old HP and expect it to work well, you can't expect your outdated programs to run on a whole new architecture and finally you can't expect something better if you want it to work with all the old software you've been complaining about... review »

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate is the next in line of Windows Vista updates. Announced on July 22, 2005, Microsoft's Windows Vista has been slowly trying to replace Windows XP. Vista's interface looks beautiful but you might have to look for the features that were simple to find on Windows XP's menus. Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate has most of Windows XP's features and a couple of new ones. Some of the new features and extras include:

    * Windows DreamScene which allows videos to be used as desktop backgrounds. DreamScene supports .mpeg and .wmv video formats.
    * Windows Sound Schemes...

Windows Vista. It works fine if you know how to use it or install it. Here is where most people go wrong. They either upgrade their spyware infected XP system to Vista and expect it to work without a glitch or install it on a Celeron with 256MB of RAM.

As for those who bought a new PC with Vista on it, I feel your pain. Unfortunately every single PC maker preloads their computers with a ton of useless trial software, ads, silly settings and tools that should be uninstalled as soon as you boot up. Or better yet, just format it fresh.

Who's fault is it? Microsofts? No, they made a great OS that other...

Despite all the bad press, and the announcement of another version of Windows so soon after Vistsa's release, I must say I find it a very advanced and workable OS. Sure, Bill Gates "borrowed" a lot of features from the Linux world, but we should all be used to that by now. When I installed it, all I had to do was update it over the Internet, and everything except for an old Card Reader was found immediately and worked perfectly. I have a lot of stuff on my computer, too. A TV card 5.1 Dolby sound, Bluetooth Dongle, jump drives, web cam, etc. Vist found all the drivers, no problem. You just can't...

I got three PC's, Two mac's, and a Macbook. I know my Linux, Unix, Dos, Windows, and OSX. I code and design. I am ashamed to say that when Vista was still in its Beta's, I was dancing around like a giddy girl waiting for its release. When it was finally purchasing day, I ran home to install it, and It crashed my brand new Dual-Core P4 3.2 GHz computer. Why?! Well it gave me a whole bunch of numbers and letters and unknown code. This was only the beginning. Throughout the next two weeks I would try to fix my computer, and install vista. Once it was finally installed, I still wasnt impressed. They... review »

I bought a HP Pavillion dv6000 when Windows Vista first came out...I was excited about the new operating system, against the better judgement of my husband who is a network administrator...

Vista definitely slowed my system down considerably...And it is extremely difficult to work with...It isn't compatible with everything....

Thankfully, my husband installed Windows XP and, believe me, my laptop is finally working to it's potential....

If you are considering buying a laptop or a desktop and Windows Vista is already installed on it, RE-THINK your plans...You will just be disappointed -- I know...

This has to be the worse windows package ever invented.  There are so many people who have limited computer knowledge, and this windows package is hard to navigate.  And if you have games or other software that you had already purchased, 9 times out of 10, they are not going to be compatible with windows vista.

If you are a computer genius, then this package is for you.  Otherwise, don't buy a computer unless they will install Windows xp for you.

Although Vista has a great graphic performance, but it extra horrible features. Since I've been using XP for a long period of time, when I switched to Vista, it irritated me because I couldn't organize the file like I did with XP. One other thing that I don't like, Vista uses an excessive amount of RAM. Instead of using Vista, XP saves RAM and boosts my laptop up. In my opinion, Vista is designed for entertainment, XP is better with works.

This is a great product as long as you are tech savy, and have some willingness to give up old habits from using XP or 2000. This includes hardware that will not be fully compatible with the vista OS, until manufactures come up with plugins for thier products. The new bells and whistle make up for the short comings that in time will be fixed.
