Microsoft is getting on my last nerve. I did the XP - big whoop on that. That knocked out my old printer. It was not compatible. Now, my computer went POOF, and Office Depot only had Microsoft Vista - no XP now. I even asked. Oh no. Microsoft is selling Vista operating systems - suddenly and totally.
I am scared to even check my printer which is about a month old. I already found that my scanner does not work with Vista. The new wireless mouse does not work either. It's not like I'm talking old pieces, and even if they were old, there's no reason to set up Vista so that all the tools are outdated and have to be replaced.
To add to the joy of finding that my equipment won't work with Vista, I also could not connect to RoadRunner. It seems they (Microsoft) do not offer a click to go to cable. The only option close is broadband with a sign in, and RR does not have sign ins. The long and short of all that is that Vista looks for what it wants, and RR is not on that list.
After 4 calls to RoadRunner, I am online - as you can see. This took some resets and trouble shooting. Since I don't have a cell phone I had to call back and back and back. I guess I can't blame Microsoft for me not having a cell phone - but still.
While trying to get online, I find that Vista does not have the normal toolbar at the top. Good grief. You have to go in and set the program to list the standard File, Edit, View etc. The RR guy helped me set that to show. What nut decided NOT to show the toolbar?
No. I have not given my Vista program a real good work out. I'm too busy trying to cover the basics like net connections and trying to decide how to pay for new equipment. There's really no excuse for these problems. When it's not broke, don't go breaking it for the heck of it or to force me to spend more, more, more.
Some folks are real excited about Vista. Some are none too thrilled. I think most general users will fall in the "none too pleased" category. Who wants a computer that will not "think" (or only thinks about the things Microsoft wants to push) and will not work with items already purchased?
I'm sure Microsoft will iron out the Vista problems, but that's too little and too late for those of us stuck with the fresh "off the line" Vista loaded machines.
I can say that the graphics do look better on Vista which seems to be the main selling point. I don't play games or watch DVDs on the computer, so that's not a huge selling point on my end. I'd much rather have a program that works and one that does not require buying new equipment to replace stuff that worked just fine on my old computer.
You can look up all sorts of tech specs on Vista. Knock yourself out. It all sounds just great. But, I know what I know - and that's enough for me. I'm not impressed. It should not take this long to hook up and use a computer, and I shouldn't have to replace my scanner and brand new mouse.
