Microsoft is getting on my last nerve. I did the XP - big whoop on that. That knocked out my old printer. It was not compatible. Now, my computer went POOF, and Office Depot only had Microsoft Vista - no XP now. I even asked. Oh no. Microsoft is selling Vista operating systems - suddenly and totally.

I am scared to even check my printer which is about a month old. I already found that my scanner does not work with Vista. The new wireless mouse does not work either. It's not like I'm talking old pieces, and even if they were old, there's no reason to set up Vista so that all the tools are outdated and have to be replaced.

To add to the joy of finding that my equipment won't work with Vista, I also could not connect to RoadRunner. It seems they (Microsoft) do not offer a click to go to cable. The only option close is broadband with a sign in, and RR does not have sign ins. The long and short of all that is that Vista looks for what it wants, and RR is not on that list.

After 4 calls to RoadRunner, I am online - as you can see. This took some resets and trouble shooting. Since I don't have a cell phone I had to call back and back and back.  I guess I can't blame Microsoft for me not having a cell phone - but still.

While trying to get online, I find that Vista does not have the normal toolbar at the top. Good grief. You have to go in and set the program to list the standard File, Edit, View etc. The RR guy helped me set that to show. What nut decided NOT to show the toolbar?

No. I have not given my Vista program a real good work out. I'm too busy trying to cover the basics like net connections and trying to decide how to pay for new equipment. There's really no excuse for these problems. When it's not broke, don't go breaking it for the heck of it or to force me to spend more, more, more.

Some folks are real excited about Vista. Some are none too thrilled. I think most general users will fall in the "none too pleased" category. Who wants a computer that will not "think" (or only thinks about the things Microsoft wants to push) and will not work with items already purchased?

I'm sure Microsoft will iron out the Vista problems, but that's too little and too late for those of us stuck with the fresh "off the line" Vista loaded machines.

I can say that the graphics do look better on Vista which seems to be the main selling point. I don't play games or watch DVDs on the computer, so that's not a huge selling point on my end. I'd much rather have a program that works and one that does not require buying new equipment to replace stuff that worked just fine on my old computer.

You can look up all sorts of tech specs on Vista. Knock yourself out. It all sounds just great. But, I know what I know - and that's enough for me. I'm not impressed. It should not take this long to hook up and use a computer, and I shouldn't have to replace my scanner and brand new mouse.

I've been troubleshooting Windows operating systems for 10+ years now, and Vista ranks right up there with ME in terms of overall crappiness. Great review!

I was wondering the same thing. Who has hours and hours to make something work? And why should it be that hard?

Thanks Jazzy! My brother is a true techie. PhD in computers. Gotta love brothers. I can always call him but usually figure things out on my own. I help others around here too. They're more likely to call me, because I talk about the "little green things" too (-: Most peoples eyes cross when you tech talk them. I have most of the issues straightened out with Vista, but I still say it was a mess and should not have been. Get things right before foisting them off on consumers.

How does something work "fine" when you're installing it for the umpteenth time?

jazzybean01 wrote on Dec 1, 2007 at 1:32PM

Hey CyndiA. I know lots of people who are having problems with Vista. That's terrible. It's frustrating to get on your computer and have nothing work. I have a Mac at home but a PC at work, and I am on the phone for 2 hours a day with the tech guys. Whew! Talk about a stressor. Great review by the way. I am not tech saavy (that's what my brothers for), and your reveiw made complete sense. I don't understand all the techy garble. When I talk to the techs for my work they're using the technical name for stuff and I'm like "oh the little green thing next to the circle with an x." Haha.

In response to usrhlp's comment from Nov 25, 2007 at 7:15PM:

Remember that this is a typical user site and not a techie gathering spot. I was early on the net and am a great net searcher. Those are my areas. When contrasted with the typical user, I'm "tech savvy." Sort of. But no expert. That's not my area. I'm just good at figuring things out. I just said "good with tech stuff." Didn't say "tech savvy." Big difference between "good" and "savvy." I got the toolbar after a while. It should not have been that hard. I'm going to try my scanner again - but prob over break. I don't have time on my hands. I don't doubt that your review would be more informed than mine, but mine would reflect much of the world and how we think and feel. That's why we have consumer review sites. I'm sure you could come over to my house and get everything right and fast. I don't have that option. Most others don't either. I'm good at figuring out tech stuff with no training or help. I'm also really good at picking up stuff if helped. I just put in bathtub knobs, and I'm sure no plumbing expert. A photo person here adopted me, and my photos are getting much better. You can add much value without slamming the average decent user of software. Your help is needed. Add tips. Add reviews. That's a lot more help than telling folks they are not as smart as they think they are - esp when they weren't thinking that from the get go.

In response to CyndiA's comment from Nov 23, 2007 at 7:27PM:

I sense hurt in your reply. I have time on my hands because my job is to play with software. IE Vista, a KINK is not indicative of "no driver currently" a kink would be "vista driver fails to install". I agree with you that there are many problems with vista, that i wont deny, You mention the normal toolbar, do you mean in IE7? Try this, "double right arrow" -> TOOLS -> Menu bar. There it is back again. IF you mean Office 2007 then they changed the interface to be a new ribbon (its stupid!). Having to replace your new equipment because it is not vista compatible is almost tantamount to getting a new car because it has no fuel.

I like your review but 'tis painfully obvious you are not as tech savvy as you feel. Your RR issues sound like someone who didn't know what they were doing. I have set vista up for every single ADSL / ISP i have come across, not a single one would be on the vista "list". I think i have already written a review of Vista, i think it is in the same ilk as yours, just a little more informed.

CyndiA wrote on Nov 23, 2007 at 7:27PM

No driver available at the time for the scanner or mouse. As I said KINKS. And there were many. It's getting better. And don't worry, I'm smart enough to know that FREE means I pay for it in there somewhere. So I'll take your attitude with a big pinch of salt too. Feel free to write your own review. When your mileage varies, it makes more sense share your own experiences than rant under a net handle. Maybe you can do that right after your 4th installation. Sounds like you have some extra time on your hands.

"internet nut, good with tech stuff, early on Internet"
After reading your review i am wondering if the above statement is true or merely made up because you are the best person you know with regards to computers. I have used vista since the 1st november 2006 and have only had 1 device "not work" with it. I upgraded the device driver and it works fine. Unless you have wong tongs special printer, you only need to download the driver and you will be fine. Easy for someone who is "good with tech stuff".

"Vista Ultimate - free with computer - got what I paid for too"
I gotta burst your bubble again. It WASN'T free, it is pseudo free, it is bunbled into the price of the computer. As someone said, you dont have ultimate retail, you will have OEM versions. You dont have to replace your scanner or mouse, just try getting the right drivers.

I have to agree that vista has many many bugs, i am on my third installation now. ready to do a 4th when SP1 is released. but overall vista works fine for what everyone needs it for!

Take this article with a BIG pinch of salt!

All readers are certainly welcome to Google Vista and read about all the numerous problems associated with the software. It's no big secret.

Thanks for the extra info. You have such a way with words. I'm always thrilled to check in and find someone calling me an idiot.

You haven't reviewed the Vista Ultimate Full Version software. What you have reviewed is an adulterated OEM version by the manufacturer of your new computer - and that computer is a poor one due to its hardware. You should have reviewed the computers performance and not something you have no knowledge on. This software happens to perform properly and very well any time it is installed on a compatible computer.

CyndiA wrote on Apr 28, 2007 at 9:49AM

You can go to a smaller shop and get XP, but it costs more to do that. Then again, it costs more to replace all the stuff that doesn't work with Vista.

CyndiA wrote on Apr 28, 2007 at 9:48AM

I didn't have an "attitude" about Microsoft before, but I'm quickly learning why there's a lot of talk about how they do business.

PattyTherre wrote on Apr 28, 2007 at 8:24AM

MH!!

I have been reading a lot of the same complaints. I need a new laptop and they all come with Vista and I don't want it. *sigh*

bkovacs wrote on Apr 27, 2007 at 8:24PM

Hard to believe that Microsofts vaunted Vista will not work with simple modern peripherals such as a mouse and scanner. Like everything else Microsoft, the problems will be fixed in time but who wants to wait six months for a scanner to work? Thanks for the warning!
