I have been using Windows Vista since the day it went RTM. As a Technet subscriber i get access to all the MS software as soon as they release it so i was eagerly awaiting Windows Vista so i could spend the weekend installing it on my new 160 GB laptop harddrive!

I promptly downloaded the Ultimate edition (all 4GB of it!) and Office 2007 Ultimate (another 4GB) and set about installing it at the first opportunity!

The installation seems to be a lot faster than XP, however this could be due to the faster harddrive and DVD ROM drive that I installed the day before.

Windows was finally installed and I realised that to run everything i needed i would need more memory. 2GB was promptly ordered and installed the next day.

Everything was much better and i finally had a usable machine again. After 2 weeks of using Vista i found it very confusing and most of the software didnt work intuitively. Windows XP was straight forward and Windows Media Player was easy to use. With Windows Vista this has all changed and things were messed about with and life was much harder. After a year i have got used to it all and it works, except when you click the X to close the player and it closes the window and carries on playing the music. You then have to reopen WMP, stop the music and then close WMP again. Stupid feature!

Windows Vista is VERY slow. When copying a file from a network location to the local pc it usually takes longer to work out how long the copying is going to take than the actual copying itself! i have even installed the update to fix this and no difference. it is still as slow as ever. After being in use for a month the Office 2007 icons failed to work and i had to recreate them by hand.

The start menu sometimes takes up to 2 minutes to display the items that i have installed and it generally thrashes the hard drive for no apparent reason. I am looking forward to getting SP1 as i am going to reinstall then for the 4th time!

Vista was NOT ready for release by any stretch of the imagination, SP1 needs to come out soon and sort out a lot of the problems everyone has. It won't be before time either!

I could talk about presentation of material here after you made a big deal of what you saw as my lack of understanding of the product. I tried hard. You have too. There's room for those who write well for the masses and also for those who really understand the technology. I went "good point" on your review though I don't understand all you're telling me. There's room for all types of reviews and reviewers here.

I have only had one device not work fully on my Dell D510. That was a custom purchased Netgear wireless card, WG511T. All i did was download the driver from the Netgear website and install it, no problems at all.
