I have seen people complain about Vista crashing, and have not had one crash I couldn't explain. Only item it wasn't compatible with was a 7 year old printer, and that is only because the manufacturer would not develop a driver. If you have a decent computer you won't have any problems. Bare minimum system probably should stick with XP until you are ready to upgrade to a new computer. I find Vista to be more stable than XP on my system (I had many driver issues on XP) I like the sidebar as it gives me a notepad and calender at my fingertips instead of having to open a new program. I don't use the windows security, all the popup warnings can be disabled fairly easily.
