Windows Vista Home Premium is Bill Gate's latest foray into your home.  Centered around the Windows Media Center, Microsoft really wants to integrate your entire entertainment center in your home.  I haven't had a chance to do that, although I have seen many interesting things done with this version of Vista.

I've even seen it fulfilling several functions on several rigs.  One serious machine (actually doing a dual-monitor setup), one above average home PC, and a run of the Mill Dell Laptop.  I have even had the unfortunate chance to see it run on an eMachine.  One major holdup is that a machine with poor RAM will chug.  The eMachine I watched run it could barely surf the internet with it's 512 megabytes of RAM dragging the Vista OS behind it.  You really need at least a gig to work at all comfortably.  I plan on adding a second gig ASAP -- I really think it'll make a difference -- especially with my gaming on the home PC.

The other major issue is software compatibility.  Only top-of-the-line software (likely being marketed towards the big rigs with mega hardware) is really being released as "Vista Compatible" or "Games for Windows".  However, anything that can run on XP can run on Vista.  It's a myth perpetuated by ignorance that it's more of a problem than that.  Yes, you will occasionally run up against a program that just won't run.  Of course, that happens with stuff made for XP, too.  Sometimes your tower just doesn't have all the steps in its staircase to get some software off the ground.  Otherwise, it's an issue of checking the compatibility settings for the individual *.exe files.  Check Windows XP Service Pack 2 and everything should be just fine.

If that doesn't work, then online functionality might be the issue -- make sure the files of your program aren't messing with Data Execution Prevention.  If you just bought Vista, make sure you make use of your 90 days free tech support.  Push your system and work the bugs out -- they'll work one on one over the phone with you.
