The local IGA had a special on the Michelina's. Ah. A meal for a $1.00. Hard to pass that up.
I picked out the Salisbury Steak with mashed potatoes and gravy. That looked good on the cover of the box, and I thought it would be hard to ruin those items.
When I read the directions, I was surprised to find that I need to cook, stir, cook, stir. Well, all right. I guess that's not too hard. The only real problem is that those directions are on the bottom. After I stirred the first time, I couldn't remember how long the second round of cooking was supposed to be. It's kind of tricky looking at the bottom in the middle of cooking.
I did stir the potatoes and flipped the Salisbury Steak as directed. The potatoes were really sticky, and it was hard to get them off the spoon and back into the container.
The amounts surprised me. I guess it should have been obvious since the container is small. There was a fourth to a half cup of potatoes and a meat patty between 2 and 3 inches across. This is definately not a Hungry Man dinner.
The potatoes tasted as sticky as they felt when I stirred them. That gravy had a whole lot of cornstarch for thickener, and I don't like a lot of cornstarch.
The meat did not taste like any Salisbury Steak I ever ate. In fact, it did not taste like anything I ever ate period. Unfortunately, I can still taste it too, and I had that for lunch.
I did see one mushroom in there. Those must be reserved for the sample pictured on the front of the package.
I really can't complain too much. When you pay $1.00 for a meal, you ought not to expect much in terms of amounts or flavor. I didn't get much. I didn't pay much. I don't think I'll be buying Michelina's Salisbury Steak again.
