Adults require between 25 - 30 grams of fiber per day in their diet. While that doesn't sound like much, most Americans eat diets with insufficient amounts of fiber.
So What to Do?
The simple answer is to change the way we eat to include foods that are higher fiber. A good example might be to replace that mound of mashed potatoes with a mound of mashed cauliflower. Work for you? I didn't think so. See, part of the problem is, most of us eat what we eat because it's what we like to eat. If changing our eating habits was an easy thing we wouldn't see the amount of obesity we do in the US. Eating habits die hard.
But if there was a supplement available to us that would for the most part be odorless and tasteless and could just be added to the foods we eat and drink to give us more than 50% of our daily fiber requirement most of us could easily hit the magic number.
Metamucil Fiber-Sure
Well Proctor & Gamble has developed just that thing, Metamucil Fiber-Sure, a flavor-free, grit-free, non-thickening form of granulated fiber that can be added to anything we eat or drink. Yes, you can add it to your mashed potatoes and no, you won't even know its there.
I added a teaspoon to a glass of water and it was just barely perceptible. In Iced Tea I couldn't detect it at all. I've tried it in any number of my favorite recipes and have not been able to tell the difference. That's a really good thing.
So What is It?
Metamucil Fiber-Sure is a natural vegetable fiber known as Inulin. Unlike psyllium, the fiber used in Metamucil's laxative products, Inulin doesn't possess the grittiness or the thickening properties of this commonly used laxative. Each teaspoon of Fiber-Sure contains 5 grams of fiber. The manufacturer suggests starting to add one teaspoon per day and increasing it to three teaspoons daily. Remember, it can be added to anything you eat.
We often begin the our day with yogurt & fruit smoothies. It's pretty easy to add three teaspoons to the blender for the three of us in the morning.
You can use Fiber-Sure in virtually anything you cook, bake or drink.
But I'm already regular
Good point. So am I. But fiber has other benefits besides regulating your digestive tract. Diets that are high in fiber have been proven to lower your cholesterol level. It is also believed that fiber-rich diets reduce the likelihood of developing other digestive system diseases such as colon and rectal cancers.
My Viewpoint
As far as I'm concerned it's a no-brainer. You can't taste it, smell it or detect a difference in your food and it's good for you. Where do I sign up? If nothing else, I'd recommend you give it a try. Or, you can always email me for my Creamy Mashed Cauliflower recipe. Your choice.
