I caught this website about a year ago when looking up a friend that had passed away. It is an on-line memorial site (like a Myspace page for the deceased). Back in March, when my beloved grandma passed away, I remembered this site and created one for her (shirley-bellavia.memory-of.com).

It is very easy to create a site.

  1. You pick a layout out of a list of about 20 that they have.
  2. You enter your loved one's general information (Name, date of birth, date of death, etc.)
  3. They create a general website from that information.
  4. You can go in with an established password and add pictures, video, sound clips, timeline information, legacy information, or other information about the person.
  5. You can set the site so that only people you invite can see it or make it public.
  6. Visitors of the site can then go on and light a candle (quick little remembrance) or leave a tribute or condolence (as long as you want... we use it to write to my grandma the things we wish we could say)

The sites are free for two weeks, then they have to be hosted. They have different rates: ($4.95/month; $49.95/year; or $94.95/forever)

$94.95 comes up real easy when you have a family full of people greiving. We actually had people's feeling hurt because they didn't get to donate towards it.

I took one star away because I wish they would allow more creative freedom to those that understand html, but all-in-all I would recommend this site to anyone that has lost a loved one. It is a great way to not only honor your loved one, but also to help yourself and others grieve and heal.

It's nice to be able to look back at something. This sounds like a nice way to honor a loved one.

Find-A-Grave is nice because its free... but Memory-of is nice because there are so many more options for the pages. I didn't feel taken advantage of at all, honestly. I felt more ripped off by the funeral home and Hospice. It was worth it to be able to add all the home videos and up to 300 pictures!!! Now when my family needs a dose of Grandma they can go there and see the videos, listen to a voice recording, look at the pictures. And the best part is that no one has to fight over who gets what printed picture or try to find them or keep them all saved on their hard drives. Sorry for my ranting and thank you for reading my review. :)

Thanks for sharing about this -- I didn't know about them.

Thanks for reviewing it. I think it is a shame that people will make money off of those who are grieving. You can make an online memorial at Find-a-Grave.com and it doesn't cost a cent!
