I had to make a set of audio CDs from an audio book. I wanted to use music CD-Rs because most inexpensive players seem to like the music CD-R more than the computer ones. Now that the music discs cost the same as those intended for computer data, that wasn't a problem.

I was out of plain silver music CD-Rs, so I stopped at a large box store and looked in their computer media section. They had a 100-stack of plain music CD-Rs and a 25-pack of Memorex Cool Colors Music CD-Rs. It was about $0.30 per disc for the colored ones and $0.25 per disc for the larger stack of the plain ones. I didn't need 100 discs so I opted for the smaller stack of colored ones. I assumed that it was just the label side which was colored.

Unfortunately, they color both sides of the disc. I suppose that's okay if you're using a good quality CD reader to play the discs on, but many inexpensive portable CD players have trouble reading surfaces that are less reflective than a clean silver disc. Of these 25 discs, 5 are orange, 5 are red, 5 are blue, 5 are purple and 5 are black. I needed the finished discs to play on a $15 Memorex CD player. I started with the orange ones and they worked fine. After I used those, I used the blue ones and they were readable. I then used a black one and the player didn't recognize it as a disc. Same for the purple ones. The red ones were okay. So out of the 25 discs, 10 of them went into the trash. 15 usable discs for $7.50 is more like $0.50 per disc which isn't a very good deal.

Save your money and skip the colored discs. They look cool but if a playet can't read them, what's the point of making a CD?
