To the Point

My mom was operated on in August 2006 in Massachusetts. In Florida she has items that enable her to be as safe as possible. We didn't have anything; however. We went to a store that sold medical devices. (You may be able to find some at Walgreen's.) One item was the Medline Bath Bench. It's great in the short term but for long term use I'd get a different one.

A Closer View

My mom just spent a month with us so the bench came in handy once again. You can buy it and see it at www.amazon.com/Medline-Bath-Bench-without-Back/dp/B0007VNZUE/ref=pd_sbs_hpc_title_1.

This has a grey seat and no back. That's why I said it's great in the short term. If my mom were using this all the time then one with a back would be a better purchase. This will run you in the $35 vicinity.

It has some great features.

  • The seat is textured so it isn't slippery when wet.
  • It has holes in the seat for drainage.
  • The legs are angled for stability.
  • The bottom of the legs have rubber foot pads that keep the bench secure in the tub.
  • It's lightweight at about 3 pounds.
  • It has built in handles making it easy to move around.
  • It fits in most tubs.
  • It's adjustable. The legs have holes in them. I pushed a button in and moved the legs to the height that is good for my mom. The seat adjusts from 14 ½ inches to 19 ½ inches in one inch intervals. The bench measures 25 inches across by 11 inches wide.

It needed some assembly but we're talking four screws under the seat.

This was a great purchase for us. My mom was very appreciative that we bought it. She has a built in seat in Florida. I'm not sure what we would have done without it.

Jo's Viewpoint

I like it!

My mom uses one of these, too, and she loves it. It's amazing how something so seemingly minor can make the difference between independence and total dependence on others.

This does sound like a good purchase for your mom. Having a place to sit when you're feeling wobbly in the shower just makes life so much easier. One less thing to worry about.

With people getting older there are going to be more and more of these needed. Great job on your review, Jo!
