McAfee Antivirus Software and Internet Security —

A few days ago I wrote about my problems with my Yahoo modem and about the wonderful young tech who came to my home to save the day.  After he replaced the modem, everything went swimmingly for a few days.  Faster response time, no disconnects, etc. -- it almost seemed too good to be true or at least too good to last, and it didn't.

Almost immediately after moving up to Internet Browser 8, I began to get messages from Yahoo telling me that my network security was about to expire and exhorting me most urgently to install McAfee Antivirus Software and Internet Security.  After taking a few rainchecks on this, I could see the writing on the wall and so yesterday I gave up any hope of getting anything done and devoted a whole morning to installing McAfee.  A whole morning is about what it took (or seemed to) what with McAfee taking hours to clear out incompatible files and install the new whatever.

I must say that I am impressed by McAfee.  It is determined to protect me whether I want it or not.  With the old Norton Anti-Virus Security, it was up to me to decide when the program should scan the gazillion and one files in my system.  McAfee is not leaving it up to me -- apparently, it is going to by-Golly scan the whole thing every single time I turn on and there appears to be no way to reschedule this function.  There I am, all set to actually get something done, and instead my poor computer is struggling along heriocally as though it is trying to complete some monumental task which never seems to get done.  If McAfee isn't scanning, it is popping up sinister PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) alerts urging me to dump something or other -- as often as not I am not even sure what the gol-darned thing IS that I'm dumping.

I am sure that if I was a true tech, I could somehow get around all this but McAfee wasn't really designed for people like me, who really just want to turn on their computer and get some ordinary task done.  As it is, just getting anything done is getting to be a major project.  The simplest task or function is taking minutes to perform -- sometimes long enough for me to go to the kitchen, make a cup of coffee, bring it back to my computer and sit there sipping for a while.  I don't know about you but in my book, that's a pretty slow action, just to go from one page of a site to another.

There are some good things about McAfee -- I didn't have to order software and my understanding is that all this heartache and grief is going to be free of charge, which reminds me of Mark Twain's joke about the preacher who could preach you a sermon for nothing and it was worth it.  After all the problems this update has given me, I almost feel that Yahoo should have paid me to download all this stuff.

One thing is for sure though, McAfee Antivirus Software and Internet Security is determined to protect us all and I guess it does.  I can guarantee you that -- with McAfee on the job, no one is going to want to mess around with your computer -- and that includes YOU!

How did I miss this? I actually had a similar problem with Norton and now am very happy with Trend. And I am a "teckie" LOL

In response to OldHippie's comment from Apr 21, 2009 at 4:59PM:

I'm glad it worked out for you. The Yahoo guy says it worked fine for some people, not so for others.

Hmmm. Since AT&T Yahoo made the switch to McAfee, so did I. No problems so far.

Wow! Sorry you went through all that. It's a frustrating shame when something that's supposed to be helpful is a hindrance instead. Thanks for the warning.
