Mazda Protege 1998 —
I just bought a 1995 Mazda Protege this past March to replace my older 1990 model. I love this car and can't praise it enough. My 1990 Mazda was at 245,000 miles and still running well. Because I drive 90 miles a day roundtrip to work, I need a dependable vehicle that is good on gas mileage. During the 8 years I owned the car, I put nearly 200,000 miles on it, had very few mechanical difficulties and got great gas mileage (35-37 mpg, highway mostly). Because of my great experience with the 1990 model, I stuck with the Mazda Protege when purchasing a new used car. My 1995 model was a slight upgrade (sun roof, automatic everything) but I got a great deal on it. This is because the model doesn't hold it's value like some other vehicles (all the better for those who love this car). Although it is a compact car, it doesn't feel like it. There is lots of room, even enough for my 6'4" husband to fit comfortably. The back seats also fold down for extra hauling space. The seats are low but not too buckety, unlike the Hondas. Although it doesn't have a lot of pick up when starting from a stopped position, due to its four cylinder engine, it does have some zip when driving and passing. If you do a lot of driving and have a tight budget, this is car you should consider!
