We bought this dryer (specifically, the Maytag MDE4658AYW) in November 2006. We spent more than we wanted to because we wanted one with a lot of versatility and that would last a long time. It had lots of cycles and temperature choices and, of course, lots of lights! (The lights didn't matter at all to us, but it seems that when you buy lots of features, you get lots of lights!) It worked great for 2 years and 2 months. Then the motor died.

When we originally bought the machine, we paid $400, which was a good amount of money for a dryer at that time. The repairman quoted us $320 to fix it. He also recommended that we not fix it, but rather spend our money on a new machine of a different brand.

Maytag has always had a good reputation, which was part of the reason we bought it. Was our problem just a fluke? Should we fix it, and stay with good ol' Maytag? I was researching the problem on the internet and I found a fix-it forum where a man was talking about having the exact same problem with his Maytag dryer, except his was only a little over a year old... barely out of warranty. We decided we better take our repairman's advice.

Edit/update: Shortly after I posted this review, a girl named Mandy contacted me and said she was with Maytag customer support. She asked me some questions and said she was going to send me a new motor free of charge. It would arrive in about 5 days. I said great! That was 15 days ago. We still have no motor. I called Mandy 3 days ago and left a message; no reply, no motor. Good old Maytag!

Edit/update #2: A few hours after I left the preceding update, a package arrived: the motor! I never heard from Mandy, but apparently she forgot to send the motor after our initial conversation, because it was shipped the day after I called to say it had never arrived.

So, bottom line (unless there are more updates to come): A fairly expensive dryer died after only 2 years. BAD. It's out of warranty, but they gave me a new motor for it anyway. GOOD. It will cost me $165 to have it installed, unless I can do it myself. BAD. It's been out of commission for over 3 weeks. BAD.

You decide.
