Maytag Dishwasher MDBH940AWB Review

When I was a kid, I had relatives that aspired to own Maytag appliances. These were, apparently, highly coveted items built by Americans that belonged to a union. Whether or not there are unions is a story for another day, but the story of a strong American company is in the here and now.

When we recently demolished our kitchen, and replaced everything, we were not sure if we would remain at the home. We wanted what we thought were quality appliances for a reasonable price. We believed that while Maytag was not the top of the line, it was a recognized appliance that everyone could appreciate.

One of the items that we purchased was the MDBH940AWB dishwasher (with the added sound pack).

• First, the sound pack for diminishing noise is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. It is a thin piece of plastic, similar to plastic wrap but a bit thicker, that "wraps" around the dishwasher. (Think plastic you would wrap dishes in if you were moving.) Whatever.
• Secondly, because we had the old dishwasher for so long I was not fully aware that anything less than a dishwasher with stainless steel insides is a total waste of money. The rack in our dishwasher immediately began to rust and the tines are already breaking off. Some are missing. I will need to continually buy new racks for this machine, or get a new one.
• Lastly, the cheap plastic handle broke. I have to open the door a particular way while I wait for the door handle to completely break off.

I understand that Maytag was purchased by Whirlpool and they use nonunion employees in the factories. I am sure this is a positive factor when looking at the bottom line. What I am also sure of, is that I will never buy Maytag or Whirlpool in the foreseeable future.
