First, I must admit that I have always loved salt and really respect people who don't feel the same way I do about it. The fact is that over the years one of the good things I have done for myself was to drastically reduce the amount of salt I consume but I just can't get used to unsalted potato chips, crackers, cheese or even unsalted butter or margarine which earns from me a resounding YECH! It was loving salt -- as much as the luscious food that it was sprinkled on -- which contributed to my weight problem over the years. When I first began to cut back on salt, I know it sounds crazy but there were times when I would have almost traded the food for the salt and just eaten the salt alone.
To make a long story short, water retention became a fact of life for me eventually and -- even though I am avidly consuming a better diet today -- Dr. Forbes has prescribed for me Maxzide, which is a combination of two diuretics: Hydrochlorothiazide and Triamterene, both of which are designed to prevent my body from absorbing too much salt or water. This medication prevents water retention by stimulating my kidneys but spares my potassium, a very important feature for a diuretic.
When you first begin the Maxzide regimen, the extra trips to the bathroom may seem an inconvenience but when this is taken on a daily basis, it alleviates the issue of water building up in the first place and things tend to return to normal.
CAUTION:
I would recommend this drug with this disclaimer. This drug works well for me but may not be for everyone and should only be prescribed by a physician who has discussed your health history and situation with you. Don't try to take this medication without a physician's advice.
MY VIEWPOINT:
Even though I have been trying to "turn over a new leaf" about what I consume, Maxzide makes a big difference in my life. Once I ran out of the gol-darned stuff for a week and my weight went up ten pounds which promptly returned to "normal" when I started taking the drug again. Here's another great thing about Maxzide -- there is a cheaper generic version of it out there which anyone can afford. From CVS Caremark Prescription Mail Order Service, I can buy the generic version of Maxzide for only $3.41 for a 90-day supply with free shipping!
If all medication and health care were THAT cheap, probably nobody would get high blood pressure!
