After reading many many reviews online and seeing many car seats in person, I was excited to learn that Maxi Cosi was approved to sell their Mico (or Cabrio, as its called in Europe) in the United States just before my daughter was born. I actually almost had a friend who was travelling in France smuggle one back with her for me! While the European version comes in more colors, I can't complain at all about the car seat as far as design, fit and function.
I have used the car seat with and without the base - with the base (and the latch system) for everyday use in our Prius, but we also tried it without the base using the seatbelt in my mom's Honda CRV, and it was just as stable and almost as easy to install (it took 2 people in the CRV, but it has a funky middle seat belt and probably would be much simpler with an ordinary shoulder/lap belt). Installation in the base is very easy - just drop the seat in and make sure it clicks in!
We got the car seat in Juice, and the fabric after 3 months shows no wear and tear or fading. It comes off pretty easily for washing as well. The harness system is a 5-point one, which is fully adjustable for layers of clothing - the tightening comes by pulling on the harness from the bottom of the seat.
My only complaint is that the seat, with my daughter in it, is somewhat heavy and a smaller person might have trouble lifting and carrying it. There are lighter seats on the market, but honestly, I don't carry her around much in the seat and I like that the seat feels sturdy.
