Maui  —

Well, the experts have spoken (some of them, anyway).  Conde Nast Traveler readers voted that the #1 Resort in Hawaii is The Four Seasons in Wailea, Maui.  I had the pleasure of being at this Four Seasons last winter, and I admit that these voters know a great thing when they see it.  Every thing is 5-star at this resort hotel, from the spa - called, appropriately enough, "The Spa" - to the restaurants to the pools and beach.

Wailea is the most luxurious part of Maui, and it's no surprise to find the three best resorts along Wailea's peaceful stretch of sand and ocean.  The Grand Wailea, on one side of the Four Seasons, is kiddie heaven with water slides galore and a rollicking day camp. On the other side of the Four Seasons is The Fairmont Kea Lani, my personal favorite of the three with a perfect blend of adult- and child-friendly activities.  Then there's this one, the Four Seasons.  Sedate and calm, even at the height of tourist season, it's the ultimate luxury resort for adults wanting to "get away from it all" as long as "all" doesn't include modern amenities and other wealthy vacationers. Because wealthy vacationers and luxury amenities are what the Four Seasons brand seems to represent.

My most recommended of the three Four Seasons restaurants is worth a mention as well:  Ferraro's, facing the ocean, is likely the most romantic dining spot in the whole island chain.  As the sun sets and piped-in classical music swells with the crashing waves, diners may forget how good the entrees are.  It is just that transporting an experience.

In short, if you're planning a luxury vacation in Maui, and you're not taking children or teenagers along, you cannot do better than the Four Seasons in the ultra-lux resort area of Wailea.  However, despite the votes of Conde Nast Traveler, I more strongly recommend either the Grand Wailea or the Fairmont Kea Lani for a luxury family vacation.  Happy children help a vacation be that much better. And both the Grand Wailea and the Fairmont Kea Lani have those all-important "adults only" pools as well - after all, it can't ALL be about the kids!
