Messy and Difficult to Clean Up
Moon Sand is another one of those good ideas that needs some work. My son asked for the Moon Sand Construction Demolition set when he saw it in the store. He loves construction and we were there to buy him a toy, so this seemed perfect for him. The pros are that my kids certainly enjoy playing with it. It doesn't dry out, either, so if it gets left out open overnight, it's still fine the next day. It molds fairly easily - about the way damp sand does. It's also fairly inexpensive. It also has a few cons, however. The biggest one is that it makes a huge mess. We've had to buy several extra moon sand packages a few times already since we lose a bunch each time it's played with. It's difficult to clean - I can never get it all up off the table without scrubbing it down. And forget about picking it up out of a carpet. At least it vacuums up easily. It also sticks to the kids and their clothes. Moon sand is moldable, but it breaks apart when you try to move or play with what you've made, no matter how hard you pack it unless you are very careful. Also, if your table has any sort of "lip", clean-up is going to be difficult since you won't be able to simply brush it over the edge. It comes with a "mat", but it's pretty small and the sand is not going to stay on it. Bottom line, you're going to be cleaning up a big mess each time your kids play with it. This is something best played with outside or with a plastic tablecloth or something under it. My kids do enjoy playing with it, but I don't enjoy the clean-up.
