Messy and Difficult to Clean Up

2

Moon Sand is another one of those good ideas that needs some work. My son asked for the Moon Sand Construction Demolition set when he saw it in the store. He loves construction and we were there to buy him a toy, so this seemed perfect for him. The pros are that my kids certainly enjoy playing with it. It doesn't dry out, either, so if it gets left out open overnight, it's still fine the next day. It molds fairly easily - about the way damp sand does. It's also fairly inexpensive. It also has a few cons, however. The biggest one is that it makes a huge mess. We've had to buy several extra moon sand packages a few times already since we lose a bunch each time it's played with. It's difficult to clean - I can never get it all up off the table without scrubbing it down. And forget about picking it up out of a carpet. At least it vacuums up easily. It also sticks to the kids and their clothes. Moon sand is moldable, but it breaks apart when you try to move or play with what you've made, no matter how hard you pack it unless you are very careful. Also, if your table has any sort of "lip", clean-up is going to be difficult since you won't be able to simply brush it over the edge. It comes with a "mat", but it's pretty small and the sand is not going to stay on it. Bottom line, you're going to be cleaning up a big mess each time your kids play with it. This is something best played with outside or with a plastic tablecloth or something under it. My kids do enjoy playing with it, but I don't enjoy the clean-up.

My 3 1/2 year old son's favorite toy

My son loves tractors and what more to add to it is sand and play with it indoors !!!  My 3 1/2 year old son loves this toy.  They toys are easy to use, the sand is easy to mold and create so many different things.  He literally will play for an hour non-stop which is amazing!  My husband and I love watching his imagination and creativity when he is playing with the Moon Sand Construction Demolition set.  It's best to buy extra sand because it does seem to go everywhere just like you would expect sand to do.    It can be messy but brushes off of clothes, sweeps or wipes up, and vacuums easily without any harm.  This toy is a great creation and for him to be able to have this much fun inside playing with sand, especially when it's cold and snowing outside it's great!  I would recommend this toy to anyone that doesn't mind letting their child be a child and not worry about a small mess that can be controlled.    The price was great and well worth the amount for all the hours of enjoyment he has had with this set.

My son wasn't thrilled....

I bought this for my 5 1/2 year old for Christmas. He had seen the commercials for moon sand and moon dough on tv and expressed interest, but had not actually played with it prior to getting the gift. Wnen he opened the box, his first observation was that there wasn' as much "sand" as he had hoped. There are two different colors, and he would prefer not to mix them together  - so this further limits the amount of sand he can play with at a time. He initially enjoyed making bricks with the molds and stacking them to make a wall, but this quickly losts it's appeal. While the fact that it does not dry out is more appealing than traditional play dough, the sand is much more difficult to confine and clean up. The sand comes in plastic bags that are not resealable, so you have to provide your own storage container once it's open.I purchased a shallow plastic storage box (the kind you can find in a craft store for scrapbook paper storage) and now store the sand and toys in the box. When my son wants to play with it, he just takes the lid off and plays with the sand in the box. However, he has only played with it twice since he opened it.

Moon sand is still messy

I was soooo hoping that Moon Sand would be neater than the alternative!  It sticks together which is great but it still gets everywhere.  My 5 year-old was forced to still play wiht it outside because it crumbles and falls apart- making a huge mess.  In fact,, clean up is worse because of the cost I don't want to waste it.  Regular sand is much more disposable!  It has is perks though- my kid can build things with it and it stays together.  He loves it so from a child's perspective- its great.  He uses all the tools that come with the kit and has also come up with his own molds to build his own unique structures.  We bought some of the extra colors that go with it and its absolutely impossible to keep the colors from mixing though- everything becomes a rainbow- not ugly jsut not what we wanted!  I would recommend it but don't expect it to last for a long time.  If you can find a deal on it (not full-price) its a great short-term play toy.
