Marylou's - All Locations - Plymouth, MA —

To the Point

Marylou's, a.k.a the best coffee in town is on its third location in my town. Much to my liking it's almost next door to my gym, Powerhouse, (reviewed) on State Street in Cedarville which is a part of Plymouth, MA.

A Closer View

Marylou's has had a bit of controversy. They have the reputation of hiring young, pretty, sexy young woman. This is not untrue. If you feel like going to their website, www.marylous.com, you will see what the commotion is all about. Thoughts range from one marketing professor feeling that Marylou's image is appealing without being exploitive while others feel that women's bodies should not be selling coffee. In the meantime they seem to be doing a very good business. I must say that they are the friendliest bunch in any coffee shop to which I've been.

The three locations all have their own parking lots. I usually go through the drive-in window and am always greeted warmly. The girls and on guy, the Manager, are willing to make me whatever I want. They usually have all their flavors on ice so I don't get the watered down version that you get when you pour hot coffee over ice!

In addition if you start driving out of the driveway and don't like the way it tastes, go back and they'll make you another one and another one until you are happy. That happened to me the other day. Rarely am I dissatisfied but on this occasion my Iced Decaf Milky Way didn't taste like it usually does. I think they made me a regular iced coffee. Another one was made and I was told that if I didn't like it they'd try again.

Marylou's is adorable. The shops are primarily pink and white making them stand out on route 3A yet it is not an eyesore. The inside of each store is always clean. Black and white tiles decorate the shop along with a couple of tables and a counter with stools.

Disappointingly Marylou's does not serve cappuccinos or lattes. I assumed when they came in that these would be available.

Their regular coffee, gourmet, hot chai and hot chocolate will run you from $.99 to $2.00. Even in this cold weather I get large flavored coffees which are now $2.75. They do not add syrup to the coffee.

Their iced coffees whether regular or decaf come in small, 10 ounces, medium, 24 ounces and superlou, 32 ounces and range in price from $1.35 to 2.75 for regular flavors. You will pay $1.50 to $3.00 for Gourmet flavors and the same for Gourmet Decaf Iced Coffee. The iced coffee comes in chocolate raspberry, creamy Irish, French vanilla, hazelnut and vanilla hazelnut. The flavors are well...flavorful. I love the creamy Irish or the chocolate raspberry if I want something sweeter. You can get Splenda as well as sugar and other sugar substitutes. There are 17 flavors of Gourmet Iced Coffee including blueberry cinnamon crumble, Snick A Doodle, white chocolate chip and Tiramisu.

II did splurge one day and got one of their Fabulous Frozen Drinks which was indeed fabulous. The FrostyLou (Marylou's favorite) comes in mocha, vanilla, coffee and oreo for $2.50 to $4.50. This comes with whipped cream.

Other products

You can buy travel mugs and 3 different sizes of ceramic mugs, their famous coffee, gift certificates, milk, juice, water, Pepsi products, Gatorade, Cigarettes, Candy, Lottery tickets, bagels and pastries. You can buy or order online their various t-shirts and hats as well as their mugs online. You can get their infamous calendar featuring the Marylou's Girls as seen in their commercials. I have seen the calendar and I think it is tastefully done. It is not pornographic in any way. I do not think most people would view it as such.

You will not find a donut here. The muffins, cheese Danish, biscotti and brownies are good but they are not baked on the premises.

The party

If you've been reading my reviews you may remember that I had a surprise birthday party for my husband. I went into MaryLou's and they took down my order for the boxes of coffee. I paid for them in case I wasn't the one picking them up. They would have given me any kind of milk I wanted and whatever kind of sweeteners I wanted. There two 10-cup boxes with all the fixings came to $25.00.

My son-in-law picked them up. They were ready right on time. I got cups, stirrers, two large cups of milk, a variety of sweeteners and one decaf and one regular box. The coffee stayed hot in these boxes all day!

Jo's Viewpoint

I like it!

Best of all: they give out cookies to dogs. Hanna loves Marylou's as much as I do.

Note to self - need to learn to drink coffee. I burned myself on coffee when I was 14 and jerked it back pouring it down my shirt. That 'bout cured me on coffee. I do love the way it smells though.
