I am an avid reader, and particularly love suspense books. I have been a huge fan of Mary Higgins Clark's books for years, and I think this might just be my favorite book of hers so far. I have read this book several times, and am in need of a new copy, mine is almost in shambles.

I can't really say why this is my favorite, I do find a few things predictable, and the ending even has a little bit of a "cheesy" part, but there is just something about it that hooks me in, over and over. It is a little different than most of Mary's books, but not so different from her style that you won't recognize it.

About the book:
The book is about an everyday, girl next door, single mom of 2 young girls, named Jenny MacPartland. She is a divorced woman that works in an art gallery in Manhattan. She is struggling to make ends meet, but is overall happy. While hosting a viewing for an upcoming new artist at the gallery, she meets the man of her dreams, Erich Krueger, the stunning, and very rich, artist whose work is the attraction for this viewing. Everyone marvels about Jenny's striking resemblance to a "Character" on one of Erichs main pieces, Caroline.  Erich proves to be a charmer and wonderful man, and they immediately fall in love. With him living so far away, and her struggling to make it, they decide to marry within a month. Overnight, she goes from being everyday Jenny, to being treated and adorned like a princess. Erich lavishes her and her daughters with clothes and other gifts. She packs up and moves to his large estate, and once there, she begins to become isolated and lonely. Weird things start to happen, even deaths, and the time she spends alone while Erich goes to his cabin to paint, start to take toll on her. She starts to see Erich for his true self, and learns of his obsession with his dead mother, Caroline, whom she so closely resembles. Her life as she knew it vanishes. The fairytale life she suddenly gained starts to unravel and turn into a horrific nightmare. She ends up fearing her marriage and the life of her and her children, and by the end, she even begins to doubt her own sanity.

My view:
I recommend this book for a quick read. At 317 pages, it isn't too long, and it really is hard to put down, making it an even faster read. It was a bestseller when it came out, in 1982.
I think that I like this book so well because so many movies and books always have the fairy tale ending, and this one has the fairly tale mid-beginning that unravels, which is a little different. Like I said above, there is a little cheesiness, but I actually like that. I can see the events in this book actually happening, which is frightening in itself. Like I also said, some parts are a little predictable, but most of it isn't, and any that are are easily forgiven.  Mary Higgins Clark does suspense wonderfully, and this is just another example of that!
