Marriott's Sawgrass Resort - Ponte Vedra Beach, FL Review

Now more than 20 years old, this facility is still holding up well and boasts an enthusiastic, warm and friendly staff.  Rooms are recently remodeled and more than adequate, although a little disappointing.  The current economic down turn and what must be a slightly over built market there, however, have depressed prices here for most times of the year except during the Sawgrass golf events.  This meant we got a good value of less than $200 per night, including breakfast during March. 

The daily breakfast buffet was well above average and the omelet chef eager to please, although very quiet.  We also dined in the upscale steak restuarant there and found it to provide large portions, exceptional cuisine and an impressive wine list.  (There are also plenty of other eating options very close by.)

The golf desk in the hotel provides numerous options for play, even without advanced reservations.  Calling ahead for a tee time is advised and you might be able to get a better deal if you ask. 

The highlight of our visit was a thorough tour of the Sawgrass PGA clubhouse and the final three holes on the main stadium course.  We were there more than a month before the big event but construction of tents and seating were well underway.  The clubhouse is fantastic, but what really made our visit memorable was our tour guide.  She was amazingly versed on every issue of golf as well as local lore and gossip.  The have a separate paved trail for golf carts to carry tourists out to see the 16th, 17th and 18th holes while not disturbing golfers.
