Market Basket / Demoulas - Chelsea, MA
It's been a long time coming but worth the wait. The brand spankin new Market Basket opened in July '09 in Chelsea and hasn't settled down for one second. It's an amazingly big store that carries a wide variety of groceries for all your wants and needs.
First off, you can choose from two size shopping carts, larger for those great big shopping trips (and also perfect for taller persons), or you have your regular cart for your average size shopping trip, nice to have choices in carts, something I never thought about before this new store opened.
Market Basket offers superior prices over many other local supermarket chains in the surrounding area. On average you can save several cents per item on many of the name brand products they carry. Their milk prices are not to be beat, a $1.69 to $1.89 for a half gallon of name brand moo juice is unheard of. At best other stores sell them for $2 dollars or more a half gallon.
One of the first things you notice when walking into the main entrance is the delicious aroma of roasting rotisserie chicken, this can be hazardous if you go in hungry as you'll want to grab one of the golden beauties and start eating it right there in front of everyone, they smell that good ! While strolling in you'll find a cafe offering delights like coffee, donuts, bagels, muffins and more, a nice treat when you need a hot cuppa joe while doing your shopping.
You'll also find a food court area that offers prepared fresh, made-in-store goodies like sushi, pizza, fried chicken, pastas, sandwiched, soup and the like. Great to grab something and go when you dont know what to make for dinner, and the prices are quite reasonable There's also a fabulous BIG in-store bakery that offers a wide variety of artisan breads, rolls, pastries, cakes, cookies and so on. All deliciously presented and very fresh. You'll also find a fresh fish counter, a fabulous deli with fine Italian delicacies and more. They even carry fresh homemade pasta too! There's a a butcher shop as long as my arm offering every cut and grind possible, it's a thing of beauty, and the prices...fuggetaboutit !
Ok aside from all these great features, now we get down to the real business of shopping AND saving. You'll find just about everything you need in every aisle including Market Basket's own brand which in many cases is equal to or surpasses a name brand product. Case in point, their Crispy Rice cereal, a 12 oz, box sells every day for $2.00 compared to Rice Krispies 13 oz. box for $3.49, a real no-brainer huh; their even better than Rice Krispies in the fact that they hold up to milk, are really crispy, taste better and they also SNAP,CRACKLE AND POP.
When I want to try a new item I'll always seek out a coupon, well even if I didn't have one I wouldn't feel at all guilty buying that product at Market Basket because it will automatically be cheaper that other grocery stores. Every week something good is on sale and you're guaranteed to save no matter how big or small your shopping list is and when you leave the store with all your goodies, you know you got a real bargain.
Now that I've gotten carried away and likely bored you to tears, I hope you readers in the New England area will try Market Basket if you haven't already. I dare anyone to shop and price compare anyday, you'll see the saving add up quickly. All in all, this particular store is always crowded but hey, those people know a good thing when they shop it too.
VERY AMPLE PARKING, WHEEL CHAIR ACCESSIBLE, EAST/WEST ENTRANCES.
